A new track layout, a new sponsor & a new found sense of confidence will be what SRT Motorsports will have for them going into Indianapolis this weekend. but can they keep up the strong finishes, & turn all of this into a win in GTLM & extend their winning streak in GTD?? Will Team Ferrari find speed on the track & get out of their slump? Allpar.com will have complete & LIVE race coverage for the Indianapolis Gran Prix!

NEW TRACK CONFIGURATION LEVELS INDY PLAYING FIELD

TUDOR CHAMPIONSHIP DRIVERS BREAK DOWN THE INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY LAYOUT

Indianapolis Motor Speedway has leveled the playing field by providing a revised race course for Friday’s Brickyard Grand Prix.

While the GRAND-AM Rolex Series raced at Indy the past two years on a 2.534-mile layout, this weekend’s competition will be on a 14-turn, 2.435-mile layout that was first used by IndyCar in May.

“Based on what we saw with the IndyCar race, I think it’s going to be good,” said Scott Pruett, who will drive the No. 01 Telcel Ford EcoBoost/Riley. “There are more passing zones, and will add a new element to the race. We’ll pretty much have to (throw away our old notes). They’ve repaved the whole place and changed the layout, so pretty much everything we’ve learned over the years without a doubt is not going to carry forward.

” Pruett was a four-time competitor in the Indianapolis 500, leading eight laps in his final race in 1995.

Christian Fittipaldi was that year’s Rookie of the Year with a second-place finish. He feels that the paving will be the biggest difference from the past two years.

“I don’t think the course will be that much different,” said Fittipaldi, who co-drives the Rolex 24 At Daytona-winning No. 5 Action Express Racing Corvette DP with Joao Barbosa. “They added a chicane on the last corner, and changed a little bit in the infield. But all in all, it’s pretty much the same track – but with a lot more grip.

“Last year the cars were sliding all over the place, but this year it should be a lot more interesting – not only for us drivers, but for the fans as well. I think the racing is going to be a lot closer, and we’re going to see more overtaking maneuvers.

” Barbosa agrees with his teammate.

“I think it’s going to improve the racing,” Barbosa said. “The Speedway did a great job resurfacing the track. We have a lot more grip, so we should be able to go racing a lot better. The track configuration changed a little bit, but the overtaking and braking zones are still pretty much the same. I think it will be better racing, for sure.”

The changes to the course will be only one of the changes that defending winner Ryan Dalziel encounters this year. After winning the 2013 event in a Daytona Prototype for Starworks Motorsport, Dalziel now drives an HPD ARX-03b/Honda Prototype for Extreme Speed Motorsport, joining Scott Sharp in the No. 1 Tequila Patrón entry. Unlike many of his former DP competitors, Dalziel recently had the opportunity to test on the revised layout.

“We had a great test at Indianapolis with ESM, and we feel we’ll have a good car there,” Dalziel said. “The new layout is very different, and the improvements are all good.”

Winners of the Rolex Series GT class in 2012, Andy Lally and John Potter now co-drive the Magnus Racing Porsche 911 GT America in the TUDOR Championship GT Daytona (GTD) class. “It will definitely be a little different in how we drive it, but not how we approach it,” Lally said. “I’m not sure how the changes will suit our Porsche, but it will be interesting. I’m very happy with what they did with the old infield section, but I’m not sure about how the new section leading onto the front straight will work. We tested and we did OK, so we’ll see how it goes.”

The changes will definitely create more action for the fans.” So on one hand, the race course used for TUDOR Championship and Continental Tire Challenge competitors will feature a revised layout with new paving.

While that may make for some changes in the racing, one factor remains constant: it’s still the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and all of the IMSA competitors are looking forward to making the best of their opportunity to “kiss the bricks” after winning on Friday.

A moment in time - Viper's First GTD Class Victory!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7muVHgi9q04

FIVE QUESTIONS WITH GTD CLASS VIPER DRIVER ... BEN KEATING!

Ben Keating gave the Dodge Viper its first TUDOR United SportsCar Championship victory last weekend, joining Jeroen Bleekemolen in the No. 33 Viper Exchange Dodge Viper SRT GT3-R in winning the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix Presented by Hawk Performance at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

The pair took the GT Daytona (GTD) class in thrilling fashion, with Bleekemolen passing Park Place Motorsports driver Kevin Estre two laps from the finish and winning by 1.038 seconds. Keating started the race on the demanding 2.459-mile circuit and led twice during his stint, turning the car over to Bleekemolen in the lead.

Keating raced a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup in last year’s American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón, winning the GTC class with Damien Faulkner at Austin’s Circuit of The Americas. It was the first time that he regularly raced a car other than a Viper in his career.

He won five career championships in Vipers – including the 2011 and 2012 SRT Viper Cup – winning five races the later year.

“Racing what he sells,” Keating operates the largest Viper dealership in the nation, located on the outskirts of Houston. ViperExchange.com is the conglomerate of Keating’s four Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep dealerships in Texas, centered at Tomball Dodge Chrysler Jeep near Houston. In all, he owns the Keating Auto Group, which includes nine dealerships representing 10 different brands.

How important was your first TUDOR Championship victory in the Dodge Viper GT3-R at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park?

“It was a huge deal. Not only is it chassis No. 1 of a brand-new car, but it was a new team, new everything. With all the setbacks we’ve had this season, whether it was blowing an engine or burning at Sebring, we feel like we’ve started over a few times. We’ve always had a fast car. We’ve got a great driver lineup and a great team. But this was the first time we’ve been on the podium – let alone being on the top step.”

How did you get involved with Vipers?

“Back in 2005, my wife gave me a Driving Experience weekend at Texas World Speedway (in College Station) for Christmas. Being that I’m a Dodge dealer, I knew I had to take a high-performance car, so I grabbed a Viper right off the showroom and took it to the speedway. It was the best stress reliever I’ve had in my entire life, and I was hooked forever. It was an adrenaline rush. Every time I’d get off the track I’d be shaking from all the adrenaline. Then the next hour sitting in the garage before the next session would be the most relaxed I’d felt in years. I fell in love with it, and ended getting involved with the Viper Racing League. I learned to race in a Viper and raced several of them, and won lots of championships with them. I also started to sell quite a few Vipers. Because the Viper community is so close knit, along the way I became the No. 1 volume Viper dealer in the world. It’s become not only what I know and love, it’s also what I sell. As I said from the podium at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, hopefully it’s a case of ‘Win on Sunday, sell on Monday.’”

How did you get to purchase the first Viper GT3-R, and how did you get involved with Bill Riley in setting up the GT Daytona team?

“Ever since the car was announced at the (2012) New York Auto Show, I was all over it. There was speculation at the time that it would be eligible for the ALMS. Bill Riley was there, Scott Atherton was there, and I was in everybody’s ear at the show, trying to see if I could make that happen. That talk went away after the merger was announced, but I was still hopeful. Quite frankly, that was why I ran the whole (2013) season in the ALMS GTC class with the Porsche, in preparation and in hopefulness of being able to run in the TUDOR Championship in a Viper. That enabled me to stay close to SRT and those relationships. Once they developed the idea that they might be able to make it happen, you had to have someone willing to take the first leap of faith – to jump off the cliff – buy the first car, help develop the car and show off what the car could do. I was eager to be the hand raiser. So early on I agreed to buy the first car and help Bill Riley develop it into one of the top cars.”

What role did you play in setting up the new Vipers?

“The development really took place in the fall and spring of this past winter. We spent quite a bit of time testing at the track in Kershaw (South Carolina). It was a matter of doing laps, figuring out what we need to work on. There’s a lot of work like that to be done with a totally brand-new car. We did a lot of driving and a lot of work, and we really felt good coming in to the brand-new series with a brand-new car. We felt we had a car capable of making it to the end of the season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona, but our only problem was we ended up having to replace the clutch. A minor tolerance difference caused the clutch to fail after 15 hours. There was no way we could have known that unless we ran the car 15 hours straight. Whether it was the clutch tolerance at Daytona, or the shifting problem that resulted in the fire at Sebring, you’re always continuing to develop the car, it’s a non-stop process.”

Now, the TUDOR Championship is headed to Indianapolis. What’s your favorite Indy 500 memory, and what’s it like to race at the famed Brickyard?

“As a kid growing up, I was not into racing cars. My father was a Ford dealer, and he won a trip to the Indy 500 in 1992, and he asked me to go with him. It was a phenomenal trip, and it was a joy to go the way we went, super first class. Our seats were right at the finish line. For your first experience to go to that iconic race, and see what was the closest finish in history at the time, was super exciting. That’s where I first learned what all the commotion was about, at what I called the ‘Super Bowl of motorsports.’

“I ran at Indy with GRAND-AM in 2012, in a Porsche with Jorg Bergmeister, and had a phenomenal weekend. It rained heavily, and it was really tricky, and Jorg was unbelievable driving in the rain. He was going by Prototypes like they were cones on the track. I kissed the bricks and have a lot of photographs from the weekend. Quite frankly, I want to win there now to make that picture legit. I feel like a poser, having kissed the bricks at Indy without a win.” (He finished 11th).

COMPETITIVE GTLM CLASS DEBUTS AT INDIANAPOLIS

Featuring the best GT racing on the planet, the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class of the TUDOR United SportsCar Challenge will race for the first time at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Friday’s Brickyard Grand Prix.

It’s shaping up as a wide-open battle among factory teams from Corvette, Viper, BMW, Porsche and Ferrari.

Corvette Racing is currently enjoying the upper hand in GTLM, with Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen riding a four-race winning streak into the Brickyard. The pair scored the first victory for the new Chevrolet Corvette C.7.R at Long Beach, and backed it up by winning in the bright yellow No. 3 ‘Vette at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen International and Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

Corvette Racing program manager Doug Fehan is looking to make it five in a row at Indy, although he wouldn’t mind seeing the No. 4 Corvette of Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin reach the top of the podium.

“There aren’t many race circuits in the world with a history as deep as Indianapolis,” Fehan said. “For more than 100 years, it has been a focal point of the American racing landscape. Having the opportunity to bring the Chevrolet Corvette C7.R – in its first season – to race in front of such knowledgeable and passionate fans and Corvette owners is a tremendous opportunity. Chevrolet has a prodigious history at IMS. We are excited to write a new chapter in Indianapolis and Corvette Racing history.”

Bobby Rahal also knows about winning at the Speedway – he drove to victory in the 1986 Indy 500 while fielding the winning car for Buddy Rice in 2004. This weekend, BMW Team RLL has a pair of BMW Z4 GTEs, the No. 55 for Bill Auberlen and Andy Priaulx and the No. 56 for John Edwards and Dirk Muller.

“I think Indianapolis Motor Speedway has done a fantastic job with the new road racing circuit,” Rahal said. “The IndyCar race was great and I feel that the IMSA race will be equally as good. It’s going to be tough for us because it’s a fast circuit with a long, long straightaway, but we’ll keep pushing and see what we get.”

SRT Motorsports has momentum on its side, coming off a pair of podium finishes at CTMP. Jonathan Bomarito and Kuno Wittmer finished second in the No. 93 Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R, followed by Marc Goossens and Dominik Farnbacher in the No. 91 IT Automotive Viper.

Porsche fans get the opportunity to cheer for three cars fielded by two different teams.

Porsche North America has a pair of 911 RSRs, the No. 911 for Rolex 24 At Daytona winners Nick Tandy and Richard Lietz, and the No. 912 for Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh From Florida winners Patrick Long and Michael Christensen.

Team Falken Tire has a pair of former Indianapolis-winning drivers in the No. 17 Porsche 911 RSR. Wolf Henzler won three Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup rounds supporting Formula One events in 2003 and 2004. Bryan Sellers won last year’s Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge race for Fall-Line Motorsports.

“This weekend will be the first time we race at Indianapolis with a works Porsche 911,” said Jens Walther, president and CEO of Porsche Motorsport North America. “The knowledge and enthusiasm of the fans here at Indianapolis, like at Le Mans, places a high level of importance on the event and adds to the reward if you can be successful here."

Ferrari is represented by the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari F458 Italia of Giancarlo Fisichella and Pierre ******. Fisichella – coming off a GTE Pro class victory for Ferrari in the 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans – was an eight-time Formula One competitor at Indianapolis, placing third in 2006 among seven top-10 finishes in the U.S. Grand Prix.

GTLM offers close, competitive racing, with the top 10 cars typically separated by less than one second. It’s anyone’s guess who will kiss the bricks and secure bragging rights for the first visit of the competitive class to the famed Speedway.

SRT Motorsports Pre-Race Report

Brickyard Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

The SRT® Motorsports Dodge Viper SRT GTS-Rs visit historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway hunting their first victory of the season in Friday’s Brickyard Grand Prix after posting consecutive double podium finishes in the previous two events.

As SRT Motorsports makes its first appearance at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the team enters the track with confidence coming off its best-ever, two-race span – results of second and third in each of the last two IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship events.

In the team’s most-recent race at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park (Mosport), the No. 93 Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R started from the pole and finished second with drivers Jonathan Bomarito and Kuno Wittmer, while the No. 91 TI Automotive Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R took third place. In the event prior, the No. 91 Viper and drivers Dominik Farnbacher and Marc Goossens finished as the runner-up and the No. 93 Viper claimed third at New York’s Watkins Glen International.

Combined with the Vipers’ double podiums in the IMSA TUDOR’s GTLM class, recent victories by Riley Technologies-built Dodge Viper SRT GT3-Rs, including a win by SRT Motorsports’ driver Wittmer, are adding to the team’s confidence.

Run out of the same Mooresville, N.C.-based shop as the GTLM program, Viper GT3-Rs recently captured victories in three series over an eight-day span. Wittmer took the checkered flag in Sunday’s World Challenge race in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, marking the Viper GT3-R’s first GT class victory in the series. Viper GT3-R driver Ben Keating won the GTD class in the IMSA TUDOR Mosport race and then went on to win the Ultimate Track Car Challenge at Virginia International Raceway in the same Viper on Friday.

As the team visits Indianapolis after the recent Viper wins, they will do so with a new supporter in TI Automotive, the primary sponsor for the No. 91 TI Automotive Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R, at the historic track.

The Brickyard Grand Prix, the seventh event for the GTLM class in the 2014 IMSA schedule, will be broadcast live from Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Friday, July 25 at 5:30 p.m. EDT on FOX Sports 1.

SRT Motorsports Storylines for Indianapolis Motor Speedway

FAMILIAR RESULTS:

SRT Motorsports finished second (93) and third (91) in the SportsCar Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park after Montreal’s Kuno Wittmer started the race from the pole and finished second in the No. 93 Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R. The result was SRT’s second-consecutive dual podium after the Vipers finished second (91) and third (93) at Watkins Glen in June. A year prior, the Vipers recorded their first dual podium in Canada when the No. 91 Viper took second and the No. 93 finished third. The team now has three dual podiums in 21 events in the IMSA TUDOR series and American Le Mans Series.

SUMMER SURGE:

The Viper team hit its stride in the summer months of 2013 and SRT Motorsports again appears to be peaking in the summer heat. During the 2013 season’s summer months, the team captured a victory, two poles and four podiums over a four-race span. In 2014, SRT Motorsports has now collected dual podiums in consecutive events, in addition to the pole position for this year’s Canada race. With confidence running high in Riley Technologies’ Mooresville, N.C.-based shop, the Viper program is hopeful for continued success throughout the summer of 2014 – and the team is yet to visit the site of its 2013 victory, Wisconsin’s Road America, the event after Indianapolis on the IMSA calendar.

INDY SPEED SHOW:

SRT Motorsports driver Jonathan Bomarito has made one appearance at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with the GRAND-AM Road Racing Series and posted a strong showing in his only visit to the track – a runner-up finish after winning the GT class pole with a speed of 100.957 mph in 2012.

VIPERS STRIKE VICTORY LANE:

While SRT Motorsports is still hunting its first victory in the 2014 IMSA TUDOR GTLM class, Dodge Viper SRT GT3-Rs have captured a number of recent wins, including one with Wittmer at the wheel. The Canadian driver claimed a GT victory in the second-of-two World Challenge races in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on Sunday, marking Wittmer’s first victory in the series since competing full-time in World Challenge from 2006 through 2010. In addition, Viper driver Ben Keating, who won the GTD class from the pole in the IMSA TUDOR’s Canadian event, was victorious in the Ultimate Track Car Challenge at Virginia International Raceway on Friday. The victories gave the Viper GT3-R wins in three different classes of competition over an eight-day span.

TI AUTOMOTIVE ON THE SKIN:

The No. 91 TI Automotive Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R will wear a new livery for the Indianapolis race to display primary sponsor TI Automotive’s colors. The new livery will feature a white body with a bold, bright green stripe outlined in dark blue from nose to tail, along with TI Automotive’s blue-and-green logo. The Auburn Hills, Mich.-based company, a leading global supplier of automotive fluid systems, will serve as the primary sponsor for the No. 91 Viper at Indianapolis. Following the Indianapolis race, TI Automotive will continue to partner with SRT Motorsports as a team associate sponsor, in addition to TI Automotive’s work with the production Viper and Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat.

RED VIPER OF DETROIT:

While its sister entry wears the blue and green colors of TI Automotive, the No. 93 Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R will continue to carry the classic ‘Viper Red’ and ‘Race White’ livery that was reintroduced in June. SRT Motorsports returned to the Dodge Viper’s classic livery at Watkins Glen International to honor the Viper’s racing heritage, including victories the Rolex 24 At Daytona in 2000, the 2000 24 Hours of Le Mans, and American Le Mans Series (ALMS) championships in 1999 and 2000.

SRT POINTS PRIMER:

After six of 11 races for the IMSA TUDOR GTLM class, the Viper SRT GTS-Rs rank third (91) and fourth (93) in the team standings with 171 and 170 points, respectively. Farnbacher and Goossens are second in the driver standings with 171 points, while Bomarito and Wittmer sit in third with 170 points. In the manufacturer standings, SRT ranks fourth with 180 points, 14 marks behind first place.

SRT Quotes for Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Dominik Farnbacher, driver, No. 91 TI Automotive Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R

How do you use video footage to prepare for a new circuit?

“What I’m looking for is the speed a driver takes into the corner, what gear they used, what braking point they used, what brake marker was used and reference points on the track. The first practice session is when you learn everything and try to orientate yourself from the video. Other than that, you learn a lot from scratch and find your own reference points. Our GTLM cars have not raced there before and it does present a challenge for us.”

Marc Goossens, driver, No. 91 TI Automotive Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R

How do you prepare for an unfamiliar circuit?

“I have never been active on the Indy track, so it’s hard for me to know what exactly to expect. Of course, it is one of the venues that everyone wants to race at. Tracks like Le Mans (Circuit de la Sarthe), (Circuit de) Monaco and Indy are recognized worldwide as special places, which is partly because of their big, yearly events. The circuit is very new for me, so hopefully we have a good track walk to detect some special areas on the track. Other than that, I will study as much on-board footage as I can before traveling there.”

What do you need to do to take your first win of 2014?

“The team is feeling very good right now and all the hard work is starting to pay off by getting the podium or even double-podium finishes. It is great to see and feel the consistency in the team. We have to keep doing what we are doing and focus on all possible details in order to get to the top step of the podium, but I have all the confidence that SRT Motorsports is not far away from that.”

Jonathan Bomarito, driver, No. 93 Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R

How would you describe racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway?

“Anytime you can race at Indy it’s special; just being at the track adds to the spectacle. It’s a fun track that is actually pretty technical. It’s hard to find a good setup with regards to the car’s handling. Indy is a new race for all the GTLM cars, so nobody knows yet if it suits their car.”

Where is your confidence entering the Indy race weekend?

“I had a good result at Indy in the past with a pole position and a second-place finish. But watching first place get to kiss the bricks after finishing with such a close second definitely makes me hungrier for that top step of the podium. The SRT Motorsports program is on a roll right now with two consecutive double podiums in GTLM, a win in GTD and another win in the World Challenge. The team has been very busy working long hours with a very busy summer schedule, so having success hopefully makes the work just a little bit easier.”

Kuno Wittmer, driver, No. 93 Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R

How do you feel after consecutive double-podium finishes?

“We can say midseason that things appear to be turning our way. In drivers’ points, we’re second and third in the championship. We’re not that far back from first. We just need to keep hustling and we would love to have a win. That’s the primary goal, but I think consistency is more important and that’s what we’re mainly focused on. The team has been fantastic. My hat’s off to the team and I’m thankful to be part of a team that works so hard day in and day out. They’re just hard-working guys with a lot of passion and that’s what important and it’s what you need on a race team – you need passion and great leadership, which we have. I think if we keep this going, we can pull this off this year, but we’re going to need a little bit of luck and keep up the hard work.”

What are you thoughts on your first race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway?

“The Indy circuit will be a first for me – I’ve never competed there – but I’ve been studying on-board video from previous events since it was put on the schedule for 2014. With the way things have been going, I’m not worried, we will be able to find our sweet spot pretty quick. It’s one of those places that has so much history like Le Mans, Monaco or Daytona. It’s the Brickyard, it’s the big one. The Indy 500 is a race that a lot of young drivers aspire to compete in and, I’m not going to lie, it’s on my bucket list. But for right not, we’re at the Brickyard going clockwise instead of counter clockwise and we’re on the road course, but you’re still in the atmosphere of all that history and it would be very sweet get a podium in Indy.”

Ferrari Team Reports - Scuderia Corsa

Scuderia Corsa presses on to Indianapolis

July 23, 2014 (Los Angeles, California)

It’s safe to say the previous pair of TUDOR United SportsCar Championship races have been difficult for the no. 63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia and drivers Alessandro Balzan and Jeff Westphal. However, both of them are entering this weekend’s Brickyard Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway upbeat and aiming for a second win of the year.

Balzan finished fourth in the Rolex Series race at IMS in the GT class driving the no. 63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia. After narrowly missing the podium then, he is hoping for a clean race and a chance to compete for the podium this time.
“To race at such a famous circuit in a Ferrari is an honor,” said Balzan. “We have had some bad luck recently, and everyone at Scuderia Corsa is motivated to get another really good result not only for our team, but for Ferrari. Right now we have a car that maybe isn’t the fastest in a straight line, but has good balance and that will be important this weekend. And as we saw in Detroit, we can count on a good strategy from the team!”

Westphal will be competing at the world-famous Brickyard for the first time this weekend, and is excited to race at the historic venue for the first time.

“The last couple of races have been difficult, but everyone at Scuderia Corsa is very motivated,” said Westphal. “Considering our position in the championship, our goal is to be aggressive and win races and to also help secure the manufacturer championship for Ferrari. I think we have a car that will be good on long runs and will be good in the infield, and the team will do everything it can to maximize the performance.”

While Scuderia Corsa competed at IMS last season, this year will present a new challenge as the road course layout has changed substantially creating a world of unknowns for the drivers and the engineers. The TUDOR Championship will be also sharing the weekend with the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series, putting the track time for the TUDOR Championship at a premium.

Keeping the challenges of the schedule and the new layout in mind, Scuderia Corsa engineer Joe La Joie will be tasked with getting the most out of the no. 63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia.

“In previous years, the Indianapolis road course presented a couple challenges – long straights, a big brake zone, and the rather abrupt transition onto the short shoot between the oval turns one and two,” said La Joie. “This has changed this year since we will run the new IndyCar circuit. It appears that we could have two significant brake zones and it is unclear as to how severe the transitions will be, if at all. The track has also been resurfaced. One of the challenges of running Indy is the logistics – NASCAR and IMSA run the oval and the road course on the same day which does not leave us much track time.”

The Brickyard Grand Prix will be shown live on Friday, July 25th 5:30 ET on FOX Sports 1. Qualifying will be streamed live on Thursday, July 24th beginning at 4:00 PM ET on IMSA.com.

Ferrari Team Reports - Risi Competizione

Preview: 2014 Tudor USSC Indy GTLM

July 22nd - Risi Comp’s Rick Mayer on the car set up at Indy.

General:

This is an abbreviated 2-day event at the 14 corner 2.435 mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway infield road course, with very little practice time and an extremely condensed schedule. These are the least favored events by all teams in the paddock: crowded paddock and pits, large car count, rush in and rush out with little track time. We will run on the same road course that Indycar used earlier this year, which is a different course from years past when Grand-Am raced here.

The Track:

Few have tested here on this configuration, only the Porsche's in GTLM. There are some fast, long corners and some 60 mph (100 kph) sections, some with single corners and some with esses. It looks to require good power down and good change of direction. Top speed will be in the range we have seen at most longer tracks (260 kph/160 mph), as there is a quick corner leading onto the front straight. The first corner will require threshold braking from 160 mph to around 55 mph. Previous history shows this infield track surface is low grip.

The setup:

This is a bit of a crap shoot, not having any previous data/knowledge from this track for this car, particularly regarding gears. The track has several low speed corners but not ‘Long Beach’ slow. The esses sections look to require some change of direction capability and curbs should be usable. We expect the track surface to be predominantly smooth. You would like to run as soft as possible for grip, but likely we’ll have to lean toward a moderately stiff setup. You run as much downforce as you can balance while keeping an eye on speed parity on the front and back straights.

Competition:

A new BoP (balance of performance) came out after the last race. This gave the Ferrari a slightly larger air restrictor (+.6mm), less weight (-30 kg) and an allowance for a higher wing placement. The Porsche received a larger air restrictor (+.7mm) and a larger front splitter. The BMW has been given a weight break (-15 kg) and the Corvette has gained weight (+25 kg). The Viper is the only GTLM car with no changes. This will tighten up the class, but still seemingly giving the Corvette and Viper an advantage. Since the Porsche was the only make to test at Indy you would like to think it will have a slight advantage. The 49 car grid on this short 2.435 mile track might limit the ‘green flag’ practice time.

The Race:

Another 2h & 45m race and the LMPCs are back for this event which will likely cause problems for the GTLM field when the Am drivers are in the cars, as it did most recently at Watkins Glen. The LMPC Am drivers’ lap times are just slightly slower than the GTLM cars, making passing difficult. The GTLM cars can run for just about the one hour mark on a tank of fuel, making it a two stop race for the class.

It’s a new track and venue for most which means that anything can happen. The performance adjustments (BoP) will certainly help and hopefully it’s enough to put us back in contention for a much stronger finish.

Freaking WOW.

..and about time I'd say. Corvette just got slower. I think Mike V. called that one spot on for weight. Good job Mike V.

Ferrari is now back in the hunt, and the Porsche is now faster, along with the Z4 GTE.

This is extremely interesting. Viper is now, going to be a match for Corvette (at least). It will be interesting to see how this affects the 458, 911, and Z4. These cars will be running even closer. It is nice to see the 458,, which for a race car, is pretty long in the tooth, get a huge break.

Wow, the rest of the season is no longer as concrete as I hoped it was going to be. I think now that Vette is heavier, Viper will be the one to catch. The Ferrari though... 30kg less weight, more power, and more wing x 2. That is the wild card. It just got a whole bunch faster. Indy is going to be a lot more interesting for sure.

I hate see a car punished like the Corvette was, but I really can't think of a car more deserving of it.

@rsg8371 We use JRI shocks on the 91 and we're using a different package on the 93. Wait until qualifying for the speed to come
