Chrysler-Chart-0814

Chrysler sold 198,379 cars and trucks in the United States in August, up nearly 20% from August 2013 and 18% ahead of July 2014 — easily beating even the most optimistic analyst estimates. The company says it was the best August sales total since 2002, and its 53rd consecutive month of sales improvements.

Jeep led the way with a 48.7% jump, extending its growth streak with best-ever monthly sales for the Cherokee and Patriot. The brand has set a new sales record every month in 2014. Cherokee was Jeep’s best seller, with Wrangler now at #3.

Ram brand wasn’t far behind in growth, with sales 38.7% higher than last year. Ram pickup/chassis-cab sales soared 32.6% to 43,775 trucks and the Ram Cargo van doubled its 2013 deliveries. ProMaster passed Cargo Van by a wide margin, but remains a small player.

The Chrysler 200 and Town & Country lifted the Chrysler brand into the black for the month. Chrysler 200 deliveries were up 39% compared to July 2014. Year-to-date (YTD) T&C sales are now up 19% compared to the first eight months of 2013.

While shortfalls in a few lines (including Caravan) and the legacy of the discontinued Avenger left Dodge brand in the red, sales of the Dart and Charger were strong, and the Journey set a new sales record.

Fiat 500 sales rose, but 500L barely registered, with a mere 33 nationwide sales. 500 is built by Chrysler; 500L is imported.

Seven Chrysler Group vehicles set sales records in August: the Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Dart, Dodge Journey, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Patriot, and the Jeep Wrangler.

At the end of the month, Chrysler Group had a 64-day supply of inventory (471,930 units). U.S. industry sales figures for August are internally projected at an estimated 17.4 million units Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate (SAAR). Analysts estimated that Chrysler had the second highest incentives in the industry for August.
