Around 467,480 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos are being recalled, worldwide, to install new a relay circuit which prevents early death of the fuel pump relay.
The problem, which was found by the company rather than regulators, may cause the fuel pump to shut off, stalling the engine or preventing startup. It has been more common for the engine to not start; and the company is not aware of any related accidents.
Complicating matters is the fact that the relay is inside the integrated power module, a complex device. However, it does not affect other functions, including airbag deployment.
The recall affects 2012-2013 Dodge Durangos, and 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokees sold outside North America with the diesel option. (Current diesel Grand Cherokees are not affected.) Dodge and Jeep will notify customers; the repair will be done at no cost. Anyone who has a no-start or stall-out problem has been asked to call their dealers; the company has a hotline at 1-800-853-1403.
