Chrysler will invest $179 million in the Dundee, Michigan plant it formerly shared with Mitsubishi and Hyundai in the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance which was dissolved earlier this year. By 2014, Chrysler could have a V6 engine pushing out over 400 horsepower, according to charts in the five year plan. Chrysler has bought the interests of Hyundai and Mitsubishi Motors and is now the sole owner of the GEMA four-cylinder engine plant in Dundee Michigan, allowing Chrysler to replace the much-criticized 1.8, 2.0, and 2.4 liter “World Engines” with advanced designs from Fiat.

The Business Journal of Milwaukee quoted Governor Jim Doyle as saying that Chrysler will not buy the Kenosha engine plant, but that Fiat will consider it for ”future opportunities within the Fiat group.” Chrysler is closing the plant, which currently builds V6 engines, in 2010, when new Phoenix engine plants go on-line.

According to the Freep, Chrysler may be planning to turbocharge a Fiat 1.8 liter four-cylinder engine to produce more torque than the company’s current 3.8 liter V6. The engine would receive direct injection and a Borg Warner turbocharger; in the Lancia Delta hatchback, it has been capable of 30 mpg.
