American Honda has replaced Chrysler as the Number 4 carmaker in U.S. calendar-year-to-date (CYTD) sales. As of September 2, Honda and Acura combined for a total of 1,083,957 sales while Chrysler was 7,787 sales behind with combined Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep sales of 1,076,170.

Chrysler’s Town & Country and Dodge Caravan were beaten by the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna in August sales. Honda sold 15,546 Odysseys last month to capture the crown in both monthly and calendar- year-to-date (CYTD) sales while Toyota moved 10,244 Siennas, barely edging out the Town & Country with 10,182 sales. Chrysler Canada today reported sales of 15,548 for the month of August, a drop of 24.2 percent compared to August 2007 when sales totaled 20,503 light vehicles. The company’s results calendar-year-to-date (CYTD) of 162,299 sales for the period January through August are about 0.8 percent behind the 162,862 sales recorded in the first eight months of 2007.

Chrysler August sales were off 34 percent, with a 39 percent plunge in car sales and a 33 percent shortfall in light truck sales. Year-to-date sales are now down 24 percent compared to the same period last year.

Toyota reported its August sales were down 9.4 percent but a closer examination of the numbers shows sales were actually down 9.3 percent. The Camry outsold the Ford F-Series again though the Ford pickup still leads in year-to-date sales. Toyota brand sales were down 9.4 percent and Lexus sales declined 9.1 percent.
