2016 Jeep Cherokee: ZF 9 speed issues over? any other problems?

I really like the way they drive. I have one specced, but the deeper I look at the reliability issues this car has had the more I get spooked. Any advice would be appreciated.

A question, Do you really need a car now or can you wait till the fall?

My 2015 Cherokee (2.4 FWD 9 speed) was flawless, other than a minor issue with the grill shutters.
I traded it because I needed a bigger vehicle to tow with.

No real time scale. Just wanted to get the $3000 incentive. I can wait, do you think they'll ever be trouble free.

The closer I get to buying it the more bad news I find online. Rental fleet manager said to 'stay away' from 15 Cherokees like the plague. I had a rental 2.4, it was a riot. I love the car, I just need a reliable car too. Thanks again for all comments.

My 2014 Cherokee Latitude with the 9 speed and V6 has been flawless over 19,000 +miles. plenty of punch, stability and ride characteristics. A joy to drive and easy to live with once you realize by virtue of the 9 speed you have more gears to deal with. It is now second nature and great in winter driving. I have the Active Drive II. I love it for longer trips especially, good mileage. Good in city driving too.

Does the active drive II raise the suspension at all? When you add that upgrade it says "off road suspension". I love the way it drives (including the 9 speed). I can't think of another car that would be this fun to drive under $50k.

I had mine parked right next to a Cherokee Sport FWD. Yes, My car was taller. I can't tell you how much taller, but you could plainly see the difference.

I'm closing in on 30K kms with my 2.4L '15 Cherokee Trailhawk, and the transmission has been flawless. A joy to drive really, and I prefer it over practically any other automatic that I've ever driven.

This really isn't about the 2016 but if my with the 2017 Cherokee Sport is an indicator I would say nothing has changed. I bought the 2017 on July 20th. By the time I got done with all of the Paperwork it was close to 6:00 PM and I drove it home (aprox. 8 miles) from the dealer. The shifts in the lower gears were clunking sometimes and sometimes not. The next day I put about 20 miles on it in mostly stop and go traffic same result. Aprox. 5 miles from home the check engine light came on. I got home and shifted in to reverse and nothing happened, shifted into drive with same result. Shut down and set for about 5 mins. turned the ignition back on and by revving the engine to about 3000 RPM got the thing to move so I could pull up onto my front lawn facing out, unloaded groceries (98F) then restarted and checked, still no reverse but pulled out in drive and headed back to dealer. At second stop light had to rev to 3000 again to get moving. Pulled into dealership about 3:00 PM, July 21st. Less than 24 hours and 50 miles was told I needed a new transmission. I would say that the 9 speeds still suck.

Did you test drive the vehicle prior to purchase? If so, was the transmission operating smoothly then?
