392 1500, Why not?

The 392 Charger and Challenger are cars I wish I could afford. But they are both thousands of dollars out of my price range. Messing around on the build and price feature on the Ram website I found a regular cab short bed 4x2 Hemi 1500 tradesman with anti slip rear and 392 gears could be had for 23k. That truck has nearly 400hp and should be quite fast. So my thought.... Why not have the option of the 392? I know it wouldn’t sell like crazy but Dodge/Ram has a tradition of creating vehicles that shouldn’t sell much (little red express, srt 10). I don’t know how much more they would have to put in to make the truck safe (brakes, transmission, electronics) but I don’t think it would be too much. I think if they put this set up in a 1500 tradesman it could be the new roadrunner (ie cheap muscle car) maybe around 26k with current incentives. I’d buy one.

"I feel your pain!" But SRT (Street & Racing Technology) has been shoved into the corner without comment from the Dodge Division. They came out with the Challenger R/T "Scat Pack 392" priced at $40K. It was a "drivers package" meaning a basic car sans leather, 8.4 screen or back Up camera, Brembo braking and a "not on the list" advanced technologies. People balked at that price point. Yet, as "used vehicles" in the $30K range, you can't hardly get your hands on one. Especially in the retro colors that you will still pay a premium for. The corporate culture is not about what sells the most but how deep they can get into your pocket. They miss the point as a mass manufacturer.

35k is a good price for how much car you get with a scat pack (I know the history but... scat is not a good name). If I was in a position to buy a car 35k needs to be the daily driver family car so SUV Van etc. I might be able to get a vehicle for “me” ie talk the wife into it for mid 20’s. Really the Hemi tradesman with 400hp is probably the vehicle I should buy and I am asking too much for the 392. Any ideas on what the 4x2 regular cab shorter bed Hemi would run in the 1/4?

Not only good but great. Especially if you look at "time" of all trucks at the end of the video. But, let's put the 392 into a truck with the 8 speed and test it against the 6.1L V-10 and see the results.

In this video, the 6.2 (Chevy) and 3.5 (Ford) easily handled the 5.7. The 3.5 walked the 5.7. I would love for Ram to put the 6.4 in the 1500s just to stick it to Ford and Chevy. Video is old, but still, Ram was clearly the slowest. There are quite a few videos of 5.0s beating 5.7s on youtube and other sites.

    Ram: 6.3
    Chevy: 5.9
    Ford: 5.4

I agree, certainly a practical and doable package. I wouldn't even be opposed to a 6.4L Hemi, 8 Speed AT, with a 4.56 rear end in it. That would be great in a RC 1500, short bed. I'll take mine with RamBox too.

Reg cab, short box, 3.92 geared, 4x2, Hemi Rams seem to just break into the 13.90's on the strip. My Crew cab 4x4 is about a second slower than that.

That is very good and as fast as many of the stock muscle cars with big blocks from the 60’s and 70’s (as tested by magazines).

Ram has a few future performance vehicles in next couple of years... one is a production version of the Rebel TRX based on DT. But I wouldn't be surprised if a sport truck shows up very soon!

Can you elaborate on the sport truck at all? I'm just interested if it would be Reg cab only or if it would be available in a crew. Hearing that a sport truck could be coming would make it the one I'd wait for.

No, not in January... will be after the debut of the truck before specialty modes come down the pipe.

Thanks to earlier posts we have a clue that Ram might be coming out with a sport truck in the future but just for me and questions in my head let’s shake some things out. the 6.4 engine in the 2500 is only a $500 upgrade but it is also only a 15hp increase over the 5.7 that is in the 1500 (for some reason the 5.7 in the 2500 has only 383hp and the 5.7 in the 1500 has 395), 6.4 truck engine is 410. The SRT 6.4, 485hp, in cars seems to be a $5,000 dollar increase (they are not the same engine l know). If you put the SRT engine in the truck would it also be a $5,000 increase or would the 1500 have more parts that could stay the same (ie brakes, transmission). Also, do they have to put the 8.4 screen and have to have the performance pages or skip those things and in turn make it less expensive upgrade to get to the 485hp.

I just wish they would commit to putting a 6.4/8 speed combo in the HD's. That would sell a lot more trucks than a 392 1/2 ton IMO. Not that I wouldn't love to see more HP in the 1500, but hot rod "street" trucks just always seem to be a very limited market.
