Jeep has released fuel economy ratings for the 2021 Gladiator EcoDiesel.

It's enough to claim best-in-class efficiency among mid sized 4wd pickups.

It's also much more powerful than the Colorado diesel's 181hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

Jeep doesn't build a 2wd Gladiator and for reference, the Gladiator diesel makes 260hp and 442 lb-ft of torque.

2wd Colorado diesel claims a better highway rating(30mpg) but the 4wd Gladiator has a better combined rating (24mpg) than 2wd and 4wd Colorado (23mpg and 22mpg).

However, full sized diesel pickups from GM, Ford and Ram all beat the Jeep. 20200831_145649.jpg 20200831_145423.jpg

Apparently the highway MPG of the JL 2.0T went up from 22 in 2020 to 24 in 2021.

    Nobody seems to know why.

The Rubicon trim loses 1 MPG in both highway and city cycles, yet keeps the same combined cycle rating? Um... sure.

My 2020 Ram window sticker showed 21/29 and 24 combined I'm pretty sure. It's averaging 21-22 in mixed driving and so far the best I've ever seen is 27 MPG on the highway with cruise set at 68 MPH.

Having said that, I have 3.92 axle gears and the Jeeps come with 3.73 axle gears. On the Jeep you cannot even get the 3.21s that are offered on the Ram, and those 3.21 gears do make a significant different in MPG with the diesel. Axle ratios don't matter a lot on gas 4x4s, but with the diesel they really do because the RPM band is much smaller and every 100 RPM makes a larger difference in fuel consumption. If a guy took a Gladiator EcoDiesel and swapped 3.21 gears into it, I'd be willing to bet that 30 MPG highway would be very likely and with the 8-speed you'd still have plenty of pulling power for the application. Frankly I was very surprised that Jeep went so deep with the axle gears on a light duty diesel pickup. Bad move IMO. They would have lost nothing off road or in towing spec with 3.21s on this Gladiator. It's got low payload and towing ratings anyway. But they would have gained highway MPG and bragging rights.

Maybe it’s the service trips to the dealer on the back of a flatbed truck that bring up the average? :p

(ok, I’ll see myself out :D)

I think it was Jay Leno who said the funniest jokes are based on truth. :)

Unfortunately with everything I’ve been reading, there definitely seems to be truth in it. But if they do somehow decide to offer a V8 of any variety in JT, I will be more than happy to disregard that truth in favor of my own little V8 themed reality. :D:p

Have seen some weeks ago, but hadn't time to look into (I do only for curiosity).
    Don't know what changes.
