Since we already have a dedicated thread to debate whether or not Dodge should get back into Nascar in the main motorsports section ("The All-time SRT/Dodge pulling out of Nascar"), I'll try to get this thread back onto the topic of Dodge's history in the Nascar Truck series at a time when they saw marketing value in their participation.

Here is a Lance Norick autographed track handout we picked up at the Bakersfield Nascar truck race in 1997. Norick's truck was owned by Walker Evans of whom a lot is already posted in the Off-road historical thread since that was his specialty.

Dodge won 15 races that year, so it is understandable that they won the manufacturer's championship. The driver's championship was won by Jack Sprague (phooey) and eluded Dodge for 3 more years when Bobby Hamilton finally closed the deal for them. In 2003, Brendan Gaughan almost pulled it off for Dodge and was leading the points right up to the final race @ Homestead but Jim Smith brought in a bunch of "ringers" and one of them crashed Gaughan out of the race. I've got some stuff on Gaughan lying around here somewhere and I'll post it when I find it.

Just realized that the Truck series is 20 years old this year. Started in 1995 as the Super Truck Series and then expanded after that. How time does fly!

Have you noticed that it tends to fly by faster as you get older? ;).

You must have been driving a Mopar. The Hemi has that effect on people.

I have a tire off that truck.

Also, the breather set up of the ARCA Le Baron.
When they moved out of their race shop in Auburn Hills, they left a bunch of stuff behind, out back.

Dodge's first win in the Truck series was done by Tony Raines on May 24, 1997 at I-70 Speedway. It took Dodge 31 races before they got their first win. Dodge 1st truck series win May 24, 1997 at Nazareth.jpg

Great photo!. All I could find was a shot of a model of this truck which I posted earlier in this thread.

It may have taken Dodge 31 races to finally win, but the results were the first indication of better things to come. Not only did Raines win it, but Jimmy Hensley finished 2nd in Richard Petty's #43 Dodge truck, and Butch Miller finished 5th in a Dodge truck owned by Walker Evans

Unfortunately, I didn't get to watch it as it was one of the few not shown on TV (at least not by my provider) and I got even more aggravated when I read in the papers how close it was to a Mopar sweep.

Bob Keselowski got win #2 for Dodge @ Richmond later that year. I did get to see that one [IMG] [IMG] [IMG].

Remember Nascar widening the front of the Rams when they won too much?

That was sometime after the Millennium, IIRC. In 1997, Nascar was glad just to have some competitive Dodges.
