so my in-laws were asking me about an odd issue with their 07 Compass 4x4 model. They were at a gas station and when they went to leave it would not allow them to shift out of park. While trying to get it to shift they learned that their brake lights werent coming on. They fiddled with the shifter some more and it finally shifted out of park and the brake lights began to work again...

Anyone have that issue with their Caliber/Compass/Patriot? It sounded like maybe the brake interlock was messing up somehow.

There is a console 'emergency release tab' that is described in the owners manual if this ever happens again. It can be pushed with a pen or some similar tool so that one is never stranded due to an inoperative BTSI (brake/transaxle shift interlock). Tow truck drivers can also use it to shift an abandoned vehicle (with no keys) out of Park.
Noting that there were no brake lights is an important clue and probably the reason for no BTSI. Look for loose fuse, unseated connectors, intermittent switch, etc. If the brake lights are out, that is the time to go in for diagnosis, because if they are working OK then nothing will test as being bad.
