FCA US Reports 2017 December and Full-year Sales (at https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/fca-us-reports-2017-december-and-full-year-sales-300577018.html )

    Down 11% overall.
Not a single Dodge product gained sales. Challenger sales were down 14%
Cherokee was heavily incentized and up 18%.
Compass may have been somewhat supply linited by the air bag recall. The local dealer had to hold a lot of their inventory because of it.
    Pacifca is doing well.
Not even 700 Fiat 500's were sold. Even with the lower prices and the bonus to delayers with separate Studios to sell them.

Overall not bad in a down market. Almost all sales reductions were from unfavorable fleet sales. Getting rid of several models and losing a little production here and there to updates makes this result OK. Now the key will be adding models and having success like Pacifica. For 2018 I expect most models to hold similar sales to small decreases except for improvement in RAM PU, Compass, Pacifica, Alfa and Wrangler.

Isn’t GM also expecting a new pickup? Sierra sales were up 13%. Silverado sales were up 24.7%.

    Across auto sales, specifically?
The rest of the economy is booming. Perhaps I missed your definition of "market".

FCA Canada Reports All-time Record Sales Year for Both Ram Brand and Ram Pickup Trucks
January 3, 2018 , Windsor, Ontario - FCA Canada today reported both December and full-year sales, closing the books on 2017 with an all-time record year for Ram brand, as well as Ram pickup trucks.

December 2017 FCA Canada sales of 17,654 vehicles were down 6 per cent when compared with results from December 2016. For the month, a sales record was achieved for Chrysler Pacifica.

In full-year 2017, Ram was the record-setting sales leader for FCA Canada, with figures exceeding 100,000 units and surpassing last year’s full-year numbers by 10 per cent. Overall, 2017 calendar-year sales for FCA Canada were 267,052 units, down 4 per cent compared with full-year 2016 sales of 278,729.

    December 2017 Sales Highlights
December 2017 was a strong month for Jeep® products. Grand Cherokee, which recently debuted the world’s fastest SUV in the form of the 707-horsepower Trackhawk, saw sales of 1,438 units in December 2017, up 67 per cent from 12 months prior (860 units). The compact Jeep Compass - completely redesigned for 2017 – saw monthly sales of 603, up 25 per cent versus sales of 482 in December 2016. Built on over 75 years of legendary 4x4 heritage, the iconic Jeep Wrangler sales were up 36 per cent with 1,047 units sold, compared with 770 vehicles sold in the same month, one year ago.

Recently announced as a repeat winner by AutoTRADER.ca as their Top Pick for Minivan, Chrysler Pacifica reached record sales for the month of December. The Canadian-built minivan achieved 638 sales, up 144 per cent compared with sales from the same month last year.

Alfa Romeo continues to design and craft some of the most stunning and exclusive cars in automotive history, all while building on a racing heritage that includes some of the most talented and storied drivers and victories.

The Alfa Romeo brand saw its best month since launch with 352 sales in December 2017. Strong sales results came from both the Stelvio and Giulia. The 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio sets a new benchmark in performance, style and technology in an SUV that could only be Italian; while the Alfa Romeo Giulia delivers race-inspired performance, advanced technologies, seductive Italian style and an exhilarating driving experience to the premium mid-size sedan segment.

    Full-year Sales Highlights
Ram brand finished 2017 strongly with a hat-trick of sales claims: the best sales year on record for the brand overall (103,843 units, versus 94,108 in 2016), the best year ever for pickup truck sales (98,465 units, versus 89,666 in 2016), and Ram pickup truck as the second highest selling vehicle in Canada for the year. On the commercial side, ProMaster vans continue to gain traction, with year-over-year sales up a notable 65 per cent.

In a uniquely Canadian sales story, all three of the products manufactured at Ontario’s Brampton Assembly Plant (BAP) saw their sales rise in 2017, versus 2016. On the Dodge brand side, Challenger and Charger sales were up 8 and 30 per cent, respectively, while Chrysler 300 was up 18 per cent.

Also made in Canada, the segment-leading Chrysler Pacifica minivan saw a noteworthy 142 per cent increase in sales, calendar-year 2017 versus 2016. Momentum continues to build behind the most awarded minivan of 2016 and 2017. When combined with Dodge Grand Caravan sales, FCA maintains its 35-plus-year claim of leading minivan sales in Canada.

    *Method of Determining Monthly Sales
Beginning with the July 2016 sales report, FCA Canada sales numbers have been calculated using a new sales reporting methodology, which is described in more detail in the explanatory note issued on September 1, 2016. Sales by dealers are derived from the New Vehicle Delivery Report, or NVDR system and reported upon the first sale reported in the NVDR system. Under the new reporting methodology, fleet sales are recorded as sales upon shipment by FCA Canada of the vehicle to the customer or end user.

    Market overall down 1.8%
US Auto Sales Fall for 2nd Year at GM, Ford, FCA, Toyota, BMW, Mazda. Total 2017 Sales Drop Below 2015 (at https://wolfstreet.com/2018/01/03/us-auto-sales-fall-for-2nd-year-at-gm-ford-toyota-fca-hyundai-kia-bmw-and-others/ )

    Looking bearish going forward:
"Soaring defaults on subprime auto loans are causing lenders to tighten up their underwriting standards, thereby locking many potential buyers with subprime credit ratings out of the new vehicle market."

Other head winds cited were rising interest rates and negative trade-in equity.

Anyone know how much of the 8.6% FCA decline is fleet adjustment? That's complicating finding meaning in the numbers, especially when Ford is (if memory isn't failing) increasing it's fleet sales at the same time FCA is decreasing same. Fleet sales are not "profitable sales volume" and so aren't going to be missed a great deal, but I do wish I had a better sense of the retail numbers.

(that said, fleet sales, while low margin, do have the effect of employing more people, which presumably increases the likelihood that those employed by the fleet sales manufacturer will buy that brand of vehicle, which may have a positive impact on non-fleet sales; so there may be positive ancillary effects to some high volume, low margin plays - anyone have any more insight?)

To answer your question specifically... in essence all sales decline was fleet adjustment. I can’t share the actual numbers in detail, but I can tell you that retail sales were basically the same this year to last.

Cherokee refresh will push it back up - and I have a feeling only Renegade is going to suffer from cannibalization.

Renegade is an entry level Jeep and a world car... its doing what its main goal was, selling in 120 countries. It will be fine.

If I remember correctly, Renegade far exceeded what was expected in US sales. Now it's dropping back closer to what expectations were.

But it does show that the CUV market is getting very competitive.

Curious as to why it's considered a Jeep (it's made in Milfi Italy). It seems more like a Fiat with a Jeep badge than a global Jeep. But, I suspect that was intentional - to introduce the world to Jeeps. I don't think the U.S. Renegade sales mean all that much. I suspect the non-Renegade Jeep sales in countries where the Renegade is also sold is the more interesting factor. Anyone have those details?

Renegade definitely isn't a 500X with a different badge. The Jeep model has a strengthened body and a more off-road biased suspension than its FIAT cousin, which is very much a "soft-roader". When you drive both, it's very clear.

Renegade, in its Trailhawk version, wipes the floor with anything in its price range. Really, it's better than something based on a car has any right to be, but that's down to the work that Jeep's engineers did on the project.

500X/Renegade are two branches of the "B-SUV" project, neither is "based on" the other. It's more correct to say that they share as much as is possible without losing their individuality as products.

Renegade is made in Melfi (not "Milfi") because that was the plant that was chosen to build it and the 500X. All of FCA's factories are measured on the same basis, and the same quality program is in place at all of them, and Melfi is one of the top-performers worldwide. Here's an overview of the plant: https://www.fcagroup.com/plants/en-US/Melfi/the_plant/Pages/default.aspx For the Renegade launch, they also did a "StreetView" tour inside the plant, which you can see here: FCA Melfi Plant (at http://fcamelfiplant.jeep.com ) (Click "Explore"). I've seen computer factories that aren't that clean...

I think Cherokee has now ceased at Toledo, to make way for the new Wrangler and its pickup variant. Global sales are sourced from Belvidere; China production is sold in China only.

Compass production is regional, and where your car comes from depends a lot on trade treaties. However, I believe that like Cherokee, the Chinese-built product is sold only in China.

Do you think the December drop in RAM vs December a year ago is showing the effects of people waiting for DT?
