Currently own a very rusty,200,000 mile 99 318 Durango with a rebuilt trans from 40000 miles ago. I am considering buying a 2000 4.7 Durango that is extremely nice but needs a trans. Can I use the 99 trans? I've never posted on here yet, but from my investigation of many other forums, this seems to be a very knowledgeable group! Thanks in advance!

Welcome to Allpar. The 1999 5.2L would have either the 44RE or 46RE transmission and the 2000 4.7L would have the 'fully electronic' 45RFE. Different transmission and wiring. It wouldn't be a good swap.
    This is a 4x4?
A 4.7L Dakota would use the same unit.

Sounds like I'll be keeping the 99 intact, and find a 45RFE. Are they known for having cooling issues or any other reoccurring problems? Still makes the project durango sound like a go as long as I can locate a good used trans for the right $! Thanks!

The 4.7 engine seems to be a bit less forgiving for poor maintenance than the 5.2. I'd make sure the engine is healthy before purchase.
