2WD Wranglers were offered for only two model years and were wisely removed from the lineup.

I am getting the drift that Selec-Trac will be the real deal.

Norm preferred his Wranglers in Sahara trim, because he could order from the factory all the goodies he didn't plan to replace, like heated leather seats, navigation, etc., without paying for the things he planned to replace or add, like beefier axles, lockers, offroad tires, etc.

I wonder if he would have been ordering his JL Sahara with Command-Trac or Select-Trac.

I think they added the 2wd with the 2007 model year, and ended with the 2010...it was no longer offered in 2011...I believe. Not sure what that actually equates to in actual years since model years/calendar years always throws me off. However many years, it thankfully wasn't long. :)

I know in the past, resorts made use of 2wd Jeeps such as the Surrey (CJ variant?)...so they have had some use. I thought the Tuxedo Park Jeeps were 2wd, but my brother restored a 4wd for his wife.

Norm had remarked to me that he often wished his Sahara had the 242 transfer case, so perhaps he would've chosen the Selec-Trac. It's a shame he's not here to ask, now that a lot of the things he thought about for the future are coming to fruition. Life's too darn short.

As someone whose only Jeep is a TJ Sport could you elaborate on what the functional and operative differences are between the systems?

I'm used to leaving my lever in 2 Hi for 98% percent of the time then switching to 4hi and lo when needed.

AWD for Wrangler, if I'm not mistaken. Something you could (probably) also leave your Wrangler in, 98% of the time (??)

Changing the topic, but staying in this thread......guesses on price?

When the Wrangler was refreshed for the 2012MY, fully loaded Sahara's broke the $50,000 USD barrier.

I can imagine with the additional options (power top), EcoDiesel, etc we may see a factory Wrangler break the $60,000 barrier.

Is that a confirmation that Selec-Trac is the mechanical version similar to that used on XJ, KJ and KK in the past?

No, just a listing of the three available systems.

The question you should consider asking is...

    Moderated...

Remember the first rule of product development. It's not about what you want but what the consumer wants.

It can suck sometimes but it is what it is....

    OK,
I just got an official dealer launch timeline.

10/12/17 – Ordering for JL starts - from what I can gather 4dr only and possible only Sahara and Rubicon. Both with the 3.6L Pentastar.

11/13/17 – Job 1 JL rolls off the production line. First production run through Jan 2018.

11/27/17 – LA auto show reveal for both 2dr and 4dr models.

12/07/17 - Ordering for 2dr JL and February production starts.

02/12/18 – Job 1 for 2dr JL off production line.

03/31/18 – Production of current JK ends.

Q4 of 2018 will see the addition of the 2.0L 4cyl Turbo and the 3.0L Diesel.

Edit: 2.0L turbo is base, 3.6L and 3.0L Diesel are step up options.

Also remember Bob Lutz famous words --and I paraphrase: don't wait for consumers to tell you what they don't know they want.

Brands like Porsche and Jeep got where they are today by developing unique products and capabilities that surprise and wow consumers.

And that's exactly how I felt about Select-Trac: I was surprised and wowed I got the benefits of both a selectable, fully capable 4WD AND a full-time AWD. I didn't have to compromise.

With most mill-of-the-run AWD systems you compromise 4WD ruggedness and capability for the sake of ease of use and convenience.

So, if I were to use Bob Lutz's yardstick, putting a run-of-the-mill AWD on Wrangler, instead of a selectable full-time 4WD, would be aiming for the lowest common denominator under the pretext of giving consumers "what they want".

Wonder how they will manage the timing of the first production units rolling off the line, before they are "officially" revealed?

Wow, there's going to be quite an overlap of JK and JL.

JK has an 8-week ordering lead time. So, if JL ordering starts in mid-to-late October, the first JLs won't be arriving to dealers until mid-to-late December, well after the LA reveal.

My guess is we will see JL on the magazines by the time the December issues appear in November.

There is a Media day some time in October from what i have been told. Would really like for it to correspond to SEMA but I think that is wishful thinking for a tease there.

Well if Job #1 roll off on 11/13 and LA is on 11/27, images should be flooding the interwebs by 11/14.
