Every review I've seen of a GM transverse engine car with the 9-speed auto has suggested that it is a smooth transmission, but suffers from slow shifts.

9 and 10-speed transmissions must be constantly shifting! Who needs that many gears? Even the 6-speed in my Avenger sounds like it's going through the gears frantically on each take-off, even after 7 years it still seems weird to have that many gears. I would prefer a 4-speed any day of the week. They are a million times better in every way.

The advantage of a 6 speed over a 4 speed or a 9 speed over a 6 speed is the engine rpms are kept closer to their optimum power band which can result in better fuel mileage and response. While I did like the old 41TE in our '00 T&C Ltd, I liked the 6 speed (62TE) in our Journey just a tad better.

Here's an idea, whatever gearset FCA uses, make it bulletproof.

The 8 speed certainly is one of the smoothest units I have driven in all my years though I question the lifetime fluid spec FCA has chosen to go with . Will it go 200K without issue ???

I find the 8 speed a happy medium . This unit seems to keep it in the correct gear and will go like heck when you ask it for power . Great unit for the Pentastar . The 6 speed auto in the wifes van is probably one of the worst I have had as far as shifting goes .

some folks have a problem with the 6 speed but others say its the best they ever had, but I think we can all agree its better then the 9 speed.

I put 26,000 miles on my first 9 speed. Flawless. I have 24,000 on #2. Flawless so far.

It seems that 8 speeds seem about right. The 9sp unit almost never used 9th so I see zero need for something that goes unused. I've driven Jeeps with the 9, I'd trade those for a unit that works and shifts like the 8 in the RWD/AWD vehicles.

I put almost 57,000 miles on my 2017 Cherokee before I traded it in for my Wrangler. My 948TE was perfect. I hated how quick it shifted out of 1st and it took a fight for it to hit 9th gear but I never had a PROBLEM out of it. The 8 speed however, I have no personal issues with it at all!

I had no problems out of it. What I described is normal 948TE behavior.

I’ve had three 9 speeds. First one worked fine for the 25k miles I had it. Next two developed harsh shifts around 15-18k miles. I’m talking so harsh it feels like the car was hit. Nothing the dealer did permanently fixed the shifts. I doubt I’ll have another 9 speed because of that.
