Perhaps breaking down the list by years, or at least current/future products first, then vintage products...

What Strat said. Also, are we SURE that Challenger is going to be on LY and not something called "LC", aka a SWB LX? I thought LY wasn't going to show up until MY2010 or 2011...

I'm not at all sure. However they do seem to have been leapfrogging in some platforms with their variants - Pacifica and minivans, Liberty and Nitro. Sort of half-platform-increments.

Great list - assume you ransacked allpar's relevant body-code pages to get parts of it - if not, please do! I'll provide URLs if you don't know 'em. I plan to borrow from your work...

Some of these I don't understand, like P1 vs PL.

Quick correction with more research this weekend:
DC = 2007 3500 Cab and Chassis. Not LD QC or RC

Please note that the "ZJ" and "ZG" Grand Cherokee First Generation Vehicles went through the 1998 MY. (I have one sitting in my drive right now.) This means that your listing for the "WJ" and "WG" should be changed also to "1999-2004".

Thanks and keep up the good work,

  8. YES,
1998 ZJ 5.9L great Jeep. Busted many knuckles on that model.

I'm confused on these listing as it pertains to the Sebring convertible. Several sources seem to have a difference on opinion:

Allpar has the 1st generation convertible and the sedans on the JA-platform, but no mention of any of the others.

Wikipedia has the 1st generation convertible built on the JX platform, and the 2nd generation convertible on the JR platform with the sedans.

Finally, Global Auto, under the section "Model Spreadsheets -> Diamler Chrysler models since 1959" they list both the 1st generation and 2nd generation convertible as being on the JX platform.

So, who's right? Can someone please clarify this for me?

A couple of other questions regarding similar vehicles and their platforms.

1). Why are the Patriot and Compass listed as being on the MK-platform and the Caliber as being on the PM-platform? I thought they were all the same?

2). Same with the Aspen, HG-platform, and the Durango, HB-platform.

3). Also, the Nitro is listed as being on the KA-platform, and the next-generation Liberty on the KK-platform, but I thought they were the same.

Is the reason for the different platforms due to slight mechanical changes, like making the Jeeps more off-road capable than the Dodges? If so, I can understand this, but why the difference between the Aspen and the Durango?

Finally, how come there are no listings for older vehicles, like the old A-bodies, B-bodies and so forth?

One last question. I thought the NS was the normal platform designation for the 1996-2000 model year minivans, not the export platform code. Am I wrong, or were they the same?

And I guess while we're at it, why do some vehicles have a different platform code listed for export, while others have one listed as being for Europe or Mexico? For example:

XH- Commander 1st gen (export) (2006-up)
    GS- Voyager, Grand Voyager (Europe)
    DX- Ram (Mexico) (2005-2008)

Thanks to everyone for your comments and corrections, the list has been updated accordingly along with some more additions and changes that I have run across...

Stratuscaster - Perhaps breaking down the list by years, or at least current/future products first, then vintage products...
I like the idea of splitting it into 2 sections as you mention, current/future and then vintage. I may do that in the near future after I do some more additions and corrections since it's easier to "edit/sort" when they are all together. Eventually I may transfer the info to a nice Excel chart.

georgejetson - What Strat said. Also, are we SURE that Challenger is going to be on LY and not something called "LC", aka a SWB LX? I thought LY wasn't going to show up until MY2010 or 2011...
    Moved from LY to "LC?"

DaveAdmin - Great list - assume you ransacked allpar's relevant body-code pages to get parts of it - if not, please do! I'll provide URLs if you don't know 'em. I plan to borrow from your work...
Some of these I don't understand, like P1 vs PL.

I have not seen the Allpar pages you mention, yes, please supply links (unless they are easy to find that is, if so point me in the right direction).

P1 vs PL - I had "P1" listed as "Neon export" and have changed it to "CKD". CKD models are "exported" out of the U.S. but some remain "U.S. models" while others are modified in the destination assembly plant for different markets.

I'm sure there are a few readers here who may not know what a CKD vehicle is, I didn't know much about them until a few years ago. CKD stands for "Completely Knocked Down". The parts to assemble and build complete vehicles are sent by ship to ten or eleven countries around the world including Iran, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Germany, Malaysia and South Africa. Shipping costs are reduced because the CKD cargo space is 60% less than what is required for a complete vehicle. At their destinations the vehicles are assembled at DCX licensed plants and sold in that country. The parts for the CKD kit are boxed to suit the sequence of the assembly lines in each plant. This makes for time-savings and efficiencies.

DCX originally started its CKD program with Malaysia's largest finance company, MBf, who started assembling Jeep Cherokees in July of 1993. They have also built Wranglers and Grand Cherokees. Sometimes CKD models may not be built for the same exact model years as here in North America. One interesting example is the Grand Cherokee "WJ" series. In North America the "WJ" generation ran from 1999-2004 with an all-new "WK" series starting in 2005. But for the CKD WJ series, known as "W1", it ran from the 1999-2005 model years. In other words, there are 2005 Grand Cherokees in other countries that are identical to the 1999-2004 model styling and features. 2006 CKD's started the new generation.

Kerryman - Quick correction with more research this weekend: DC = 2007 3500 Cab and Chassis. Not LD QC or RC
Fixed, looks like they made a few changes to the 2007 codes.

Bob Sheaves - Small change-"CJ" was NOT known as "Wrangler". The name "Wrangler" was never used until the YJ.
Fixed, thanks also for the link to the detailed list of Jeeps, I may have to expand my section to include some of the CJ_ sub variations.

js2 - Please note that the "ZJ" and "ZG" Grand Cherokee First Generation Vehicles went through the 1998 MY
    Typo, fixed.

mustbebryan - I'm confused on these listing as it pertains to the Sebring convertible. Several sources seem to have a difference on opinion
    Fixed.

mustbebryan - Why are the Patriot and Compass listed as being on the MK-platform and the Caliber as being on the PM-platform?
Confuses me too, maybe someone can explain it better as to how all of the codes are assigned within the same "platform".

mustbebryan - One last question. I thought the NS was the normal platform designation for the 1996-2000 model year minivans, not the export platform code. Am I wrong, or were they the same?
Fixed, should not have been listed as "export"

mustbebryan - And I guess while we're at it, why do some vehicles have a different platform code listed for export, while others have one listed as being for Europe or Mexico? For example:
XH- Commander 1st gen (export) (2006-up)
    GS- Voyager, Grand Voyager (Europe)
    DX- Ram (Mexico) (2005-2008)

"Export" would refer to a longer list of countries whereas "Europe/Mexico" for example would be just for those countries, if that makes sense. Maybe I should list them as "export" and "export, Europe" / "export Mexico"...

mustbebryan - Finally, how come there are no listings for older vehicles, like the old A-bodies, B-bodies and so forth?
I may expand the list to include those but wanted to concentrate on the "newer" vehicles first.

I'll never forget being in a dealer's showroom where they had set one of the cars on the floor to cycling through the computer voice's full set of warnings as a demonstation.

An elderly couple walked up and stood there listening thgrough a full cycle of warnings.

The lady turned to the man and said something to the effect that the dealer shouldn't be trying to sell car with all of those things wrong!
