2019 Dodge Neon Forbidden Fruit Drive: It’s Back!

Rebadged Fiat Tipo makes its way into Mexico

It's back! Well, not really. The 2019 Dodge Neon is technically a rebadged Fiat Tipo, and it arrived in Mexico back in 2016. Although there were rumors that the Neon could make it to the U.S., those were dead once the Big Three abandoned sedans in America. But in Mexico, where the sedan is big and very healthy, a car like the Neon works well. During a recent trip to Mexico City, I had a chance to sample the Neon, and although this is an economy car, its compact size and generous interior have made it popular among Mexican buyers.

It might do better than the Dart/200 did, but the U.S. market would have to shift back to sedans first... which may not happen at all.

And the problem is once FCA (and Ford and GM) lose those sedan customers to the Japanese brands, it is harder and more expensive to win them back if sedans come back in style.

Look at the small pickup market for an example and the juggernaut the Toyota Tacoma became (while still being a mediocre offering) once the other players abandoned the small truck market (and the few that remained offered less than stellar alternatives like Nissan Frontier and the original GM Colorado /Canyon). Despite new entries of the Ford Ranger and Jeep Gladiator, Tacoma sales still increased in 2019.

Does anyone know if an American can buy one of these Dodge Neons in Mexico and bring it back to the U.S. and get it registered like any other car? Or would you have to get a bunch of testing and modifications on it that would cost a fortune?

Your second point is the correct one.

Saw one here up from Mexico at a Boston Market. Very nice. Would have made a better Dart than what we got
