So after my 03 Sebring Coupe was totaled 13 days ago by some lady in a Toyota running a red light... And suffering in a Camry for 8 days... I now have a new car! I picked up a well taken care of one owner 09 Patriot Limited 4x4 FDII from a local dealership. It barley was on their lot 6 days before I snatched it up... Here's the pix form the dealer, I'll post more later after I take it to be detailed and other agreed upon items done.

Love the color, but that silver bumper? What's up with that? Never saw that color combo on a patriot before.

Aren't all 07-10 Limiteds like that?

All Limited's have that bumper, regardless of body color.

Ugh. My check engine light is on. No key dance code. AutoZone pulled it. It's P0420. The catalytic converter is bad! How hard is it to get Chrysler to replace it under the Federal Emissions Warranty?

    Call them and ask.

But then again, it may NOT be the catalytic converter...

    Here are some possibilities: http://engine-codes.com/p0420_jeep.html

Maybe some fuel cleaner will do the trick.

3 month 3k miles. Covers mostly mechanical parts. Couldn't afford a service contract, would drive payments up another $100 a month. It's intermittent. When they detail for delivery I'm gonna have them check into it. Maybe it's just bad plugs..

Make sure they are aware of the issue, and have it documented, while you are still under warranty.

Im not one to suggest trying parts until you find the issue, but one thing to focus upon is the O2 sensor.
Check all the air tubes and converter tubs for leaks, good tight connections etc.
That code could be ANYTHING in that system, not specifically the Cat.
It cold be as simple as an exhaust leak ahead of the O2 sensor or Cat.

What Pat Goss would say - do the test that has the same number as the code, to find out what is really wrong. Parts replacement withou doing the test risks wasting money.

Try fuel system cleaner from autozone napa advance etc, O2 sensors and gas cap would be other things I replace before doing the cat. Isn't there some sort of Federal warranty thing about replacing cats?

Yes, the O2 Sensor is in that error code group. Read the code technical section and it specifically mentions the O2 Sensor, Ive had many of them go bad on customers Jeeps. AND I specifically mention not replacing parts on a guess. There are processes of elimination that can be tried without buying parts.
The federal warranty is 80,000 miles on covered emission parts ,including the CAT. However check the fine print for coverage when you are not the original owner. The coverage should transfer.

The very first thing I would try is to lubricate the gasket on the gas cap with a tiny bit of lithium grease. Spread it very thinly on the whole gasket surface. I know, that doesn't necessarily match the code.

I've seen low refrigerant in the air conditioner on a mid-'80s car trip the code for the speed sensor.
