Yes there are some newer filters out there. As an example Purolator make another filter called the Purolator Boss which has a full synthetic filter media where the Purolator One has a synthetic blend filter media.

So it sounds like Russ Kinzie should do another update.

Those are both good filters. I was surprised at how good the Motorcraft ones Walmart stocks are. Those are nearly as cheap as the Fram in price but more along the lines of the Bosch Premium in build quality (and may even be the same filter save branding).

I'd love to see him do another update. I'm tempted to see if someone like AvE would do a teardown and scientific comparison of the filters and types on his channel. If I had money to Patreon him, I'd ask him to do it.

Agreed. I'd have used the Motorcraft filters if WalMart stocked the right size. And like the OP, I wouldn't mind switching to the FL1A, but clearance is in issue on my Dakota.

Even Wally's store brand is given good reviews:

Here's a forum where the fifth post mentions a change in the Purolater filters that may have lowered their quality and prompted WM to stop stocking them:

I worked in a government contractor's laboratory for many years. I was using FoMoCo FL1 filters on my 1964 Falcon with a 260 V8 and Kendall 10W-30 oil. I brought in a sample of my oil when I changed it at 3000 miles, this was probably 1967 or 68 and there were no particles larger than 10 microns in the oil, it met pretty well what was expected of it per SAE tests. I have used Motorcraft FL1A filters on my turbo 2 K-car, but run Royal Purple in it.
