You're right, Jerry. It looks like the same nose but the lamp decals look like those of an Intrepid. Who knows. Maybe the 45 in the photo was a show car and they slapped something together.

IIRC They ran the Intrepid in 2001 and 2002. In 2003 they ran the Stratus nose with Intrepid decals and still called Intrepid. In 2004 they made it right and put the Stratus decals as a hold over before the vacuum nose Charger came out in 2005. When they changed over to the COT, they used the opportunity to pitch the Avenger which only lasted a year before they went back to the Charger.

In 2007, NASCAR ran the select races with the Car of Tomorrow, and everything else with the generation 4 "twisted sister" car. They ran the Avenger as the COT to compliment the Avenger launch, and the Charger at the other tracks. When the COT saw a full roll out in 2008, Dodge branded it as a Charger.

The first year for the COT was 2007. You had to run the COT in 16 races for 2007 but you ran the previous body style at the rest of the races which were Dodge Chargers. From 2008 through 2012 everyone used the COT cars. In 2007 the COT Dodge cars were called Avengers for those 16 races only. For 2008 till 2012 all Dodges were COT cars and were called Chargers. See pictures for 2007 Dodge Avengers for the first Cars of Tomorrow.

You-tube link to the 2001 Michigan race which, IIRC, was the first win for Dodge after their return to Nascar Cup racing in 2001. Kinda long (over 3 hours) so you might want to skip to the best part (the last hour, or so).

I always liked Sterlin' Marlin - even when he wasn't driving a Mopar.

I'm not sure what race he just won, but here is a happy Bill Elliot (photo shared from Pinterest).
