If you want to see Nascar racers who know what they are doing on a road course, go to the "Historical Mopar in Nascar II" thread in Historical and check out the videos in posts # 167 on P9 and #368 on P19. There are also plenty of stills from Riverside on that thread. You can also check out the "74 Dodge Charger" thread for the story of Herschel McGriff @ LeMans (unfortunately he only lasted 4 laps because of the crappy gas they raced with) but there is a nice video of a replica of his car being driven by someone with road racing experience.

When I was growing up I was a huge fan of the King. After he went to something else I quit watching Nascar as well. As I became old enough to attend races on my own was the time he was leaving. So I attended my first race the Daytona 500 in 2001, and followed until 2012.

You may not have been old enough then to remember the first time that Richard Petty "left" for another brand. In 1969, he switched to running Fords after Chrysler Corp would not let him switch from driving Plymouths to Dodges. The '68 - '69 Roadrunner body was not aerodynamic enough on the big tracks and Dodge already had their winged car out on the tracks. The "Motor Trend 500" @ Riverside was the first race of the year and Ford made sure that Petty, who always had had trouble staying on the track in his Plymouths, would look good on the track. They had him out practicing & learning with Dan Gurney, AJ Foyt, and Parnelli Jones - all expert road racers. "Motor Trend" had just named the '69 Roadrunner "Car of the Year" and the whole infield was full of RR exhibits and here was the star Plymouth driver racing in a Ford. That was already depressing enough but then Petty went on to win the race which was really humiliating for a Mopar fan. To further grind our noses into the dirt, Ford then ran these ads in "Motor Trend" and other racing enthusiasts' publications...............

The only good thing that came out of all this was that when Petty returned to racing Plymouths in 1970, he knew the short way around Riverside, ran up front, stayed on the track (mostly), and won multiple races there in the following years.

I was 9, but followed it as close as I could find news at the time. I was so sad seeing him in a Ford that year.

Kasey Kahne will be in the #95 for Levine Family Racing which is aligned with Richard Childress Racing for 2018.

With two up and coming drivers (Bowman and Bryon), HMS was not really interested in resigning Kasey. So now HMS has three young bucks (Byron, Bowman, and Elliott) and an "old" man (Johnson).

Saw an interesting article on Jayski about predictions made by a track owner. He predicted a manufacturer change for a top team for 2019. It seems to parallel what has been discussed on this forum.

To be honest with you guys, I don't think Petty makes the GM move and partners with RC without Dodge being in the future. Ford supposedly had an offer to keep them and a hunch says that was what took so long for the announcement. Nothing to back it up just a gut hunch. In any case, February is getting closer by the day so if 2019 is target we will know in a few short weeks.

Hinting that Levine Family Racing and Kahne are following RCR to Dodge in '19? ;)

I was just picking on you. Even if RCR/RPM to Dodge is a done deal, I'm sure all of these other tech alliances are up in the air. Granted, if it all comes together, I would love to see Kahne back in a MoPar.

That 95 is a gorgeous car though. Once you overlook the bowtie that is.

    Booooooooooooooo!

    Hisssssssss!

Seeing that car still hurts - almost 50 years later. That 500 miler @ Riverside usually took close to 6 hrs to run. In 1969, that was the longest 6 hours of my life.
