It's been well flagged that FCA Europe is getting out of the small diesel engine game. Thanks to Volkswagen, the EU has accelerated its schedule for tightening diesel emissions, which will make these engines too expensive to use in small cars. Meanwhile mild hybrid offers a cheaper, lighter way to meet emissions targets while also improving driver responsiveness.
FireFly plus mild hybrid will replace the current 1.3 diesel across the company's range. FireFly alone will replace the TwinAir, 1.2 FIRE and 1.4 FIRE in gasoline. Four engines in three families replaced by two engines in one family.
Ypsilon is still a steady seller, and the Lancia brand would support a second model in Italy. However, because it's "in Italy", that second model would have to be a B-segment car, and until Primo/Argo, FCA Europe didn't have a good, modern set of parts to build one from. Here's hoping...
