It behaved flawlessly in the Pacifica I drove, annoying as heck in the Cruz.... Awful on the S class..... it may be a driving habit thing with individuals how you hold the brake and switch IDK in general the Pacifica was the first time it didn't bug the heck out of me.... but another driver it bugged her to death in the Pacifica.

I have yet to see a vehicle without a disable button.... so one cannot complain to much because you can just turn it off. Which I did for her.

If I have to turn it off *every time* then it is too intrusive for me. If it is a something that you set once and leave it, that would be fine. There is no reason that it could not be set up that way.

I'm guessing it is just a programming issue.

I think, but I'm not 100% sure, that if it defaults to off (or can permanently be set to off) then the feature cannot be used as part of the emissions/MPG testing cycles.

I don't know that you can't for a rental I wasn't going to leaf thru the menu option in the Uconnect.... if I have a vehicle for a couple days hitting a switch is not a problem.

Its like the heated wheel on start up, I had to turn that off. :D

Stop/Start defaults to on after every ignition cycle, regardless of what the last user interaction was.

So You are ready to go directly to mild hybrid engines :)
In that You'll not notice since the electric motor will continue to run and not stop like in a start/stop system.

Have driven several rentals with stop/start. Tried each of the Big Three's systems. Never noticed it as an annoyance. Usually the feature was easy too override. Some i just had to let up on brake pedal momentarily to kit engine and ac on. Max ac setting often overrides stop/start also. Only really noticed the engine off when car was hot and ac cut-off at a light.
And I am one that thought i"d never like the system but they work fine imo.

The biggest concern I hear from passengers in my rentals with stop/start...most often Engineers is they question the additional wear it puts on the starter vs fuel savings.

    Anyone know?

They use BSG in the FCA system IIRC, regardless they are engineered to handle the extra cycles and wear

My 2 week rental with a Malibu the ESS was absolutely horrible. The wife and I both had issues such as you had with the Alfa and we drive very differently. I'm very please to see the BSG seems to work near seamlessly. I think once that is the standard, most will easily accept the tech.

Everything is beefed up just for that reason. Long term wear and tear is expected to be similar to cars without. Will the extra cost of the beefed up components be made up by better mpg? Your mileage may very....

I figured that would be the case.

I imagine someone like Z Automotive will offer an aftermarket option to set it to off.

That would depend on how well it was implemented.

I've only driven the car for about 5 miles and didn't have a problem with it. I can't say how my opinion might change if I drove it more.

She has not found it to be intrusive in her driving of the car.

Electric cars seem to be gaining momentum in the market, so maybe qualify that by saying you won't be able to buy a new ICE car without ESS.

When I drove a 2018 Cherokee TH with the 3.2L I didn't notice it much.
I then drove a new Compass and the Stop/Start was far worse.

The quieter the engine the less it's noticed. I know for a fact teh 2.4s liek to sound liek a diesel while my dads 3.2 is quiet.

2.4L is VERY quiet except when you gun it. Then it is loud.
