Transmission ID decoding

    Greetings,

    I have a need to identify two Dodge transmissions that I have. I have the numbers taken off the drivers side 'pad' just above the pan:

    PK5211843125449326
    PK453128100506680

    I have found many requests and responses for decoding the numbers however I have found no answer that actually speaks to where the translation comes from... i.e. a source for decoding the numbers.

    I am trying to determine the model and year of both the transmissions mentioned above and to also determine if I can replace the 2nd listed unit above with the 1st listed in a 1990 Dodge Ram B250 van.

    The differences I see between the two that I mentioned is an electronic connector which is a 3 pin inline connector on the 2nd one and an 8 pin din type connector on the 1st. Pulling the pans on both reveals there are a few more solenoids it looks like in the 1st number above than the 2nd. Out side of that the only other difference is a 2 pin connector on the tail stock of the 1st mentioned transmission and the absence of that on the 2nd. Both look to have overdrive and both look like they have lock up torque converters. Oh, and there is a slight difference in the actual pans. Other than that they both look pretty identical, are the same length, have the same style tail stock and the same bolt pattern on the bell housing.

    Outside of the above, it has been a bear to try to nail down what these are and what features one has over the other. Even O'Reily's auto parts could not nail it down... with their central parts support line. This, along with the fact that for any given Dodge vehicle, it could have come with one of a dozen different transmission options seems to be a major issue with all Chrysler/Dodge transmissions. Makes one wonder how the right parts for repair are ever identified.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    It is likely the part number for the transmission is contaioned within the first numbers for each transmission.
    4532281 is a valid part number for a V6 auto OD transmission used in vans, full sized pickups and Dakotas for the 1989 model year after 1/26/1989. I don't have a 1990 parts book to verify the number carried over into 1990.
    52118431 would be much newer, at least 1996, which is an electronically controlled, OBDII compliant transmission which would not be compatible with a 1990 vehicle due to the more sophisticated electronic controls in a 1996 or newer vehicle and not present in the 1990 van.

    Thanks for the reply valiant67. The 4532281 unit was pulled from a 1990 Dodge Ram B250 van with a V8 318ci (5.2L) engine. Does one need a parts book for every year to decode a transmission made in that year? I find it amazing that these numbers are not universally decodable right to the features and/or model of the transmission. There are no other identifiers on the transmission otherwise. How does one insure the right parts if needed for any given Dodge/Chrysler transmission. In the case of these transmissions, I can't identify if they are a 727, 904, A500, A518, 42re, 42rh and I could go on and on. From what I read, the 1st 7 and/or 8 numbers represent the transmission type/model, the next 4 identify the mfr. date which is some number of days from some reference point tho I can't find what that reference point is, and the remaining 4 are a serial number for the transmission itself.

    The 2nd number was pulled from a '96 Dodge Ram 2500 with a 5.9L engine and also had overdrive. I seem to be stuck between a rock and a hard place at this time as the 1st numbered unit is shot. Chips in the pan, black and burned oil, etc.
