FCA announced today that its diesel cars do not use a device that alters the emissions when the car is being tested. FCA=1 VW=0

Nice. The 10% discrepancy must have been testing error.

The arrogance on the part of VW is just amazing...not surprising though.

Yes, Mr. Sheaves, I remember the Chrysler adverts with German Engineering being touted.

The way they said that, you'd half-expect to see a Benz Badged with Chrysler emblems ... but there they were, actual American products (with the good American stuff removed).

A discrepancy is one thing, but to write code to avoid compliance is another.

I'm suspecting something more manic than Germanic. Maybe Piech going crazy with the idea of VW becoming number ein in sales. That could push underlings into cutting corners to, as Picard would say, make it so.

As someone with German blood (at least partly) I cannot deny the arrogance part...however, it is nicely balanced by the Irish.

Add BMW to that mix for sure.

    I doubt that.

I believe that any manufacturer optimizes for the test cycle load and real-world emissions should have some discrepancies, but still, it should run the same strategy or a reasonably similar one over a large spectrum of loads. IMHO.

The difference between discrepancy and an intentional programming to pass emissions test cycle are two different things though.

This might just destroy the vw brand if it doesn't bleed into the others that have diesel variants. Skoda, Seat and Audi come to mind.

In exchange for building the Routan, VW supplied 2.0L diesels for Chrysler vehicles. I wonder if this will hit any of those cars (if it expands ouside US models).

But, I believe, none of the 2.0 Diesels were for North America.

That's why I said "if it expands outside of US models." :)

If they messed with emissions for the diesels, what would have stopped them from messing with the gas motors?

I am sure all of the VW engines are being reviewed for their emissions.

I would beleive it's more a management issue than tone that exists with individual workers. The drive to keep a family well is not unique.

As far as i know I have only Polish blood.

There is a difference between optimizing test results when running the test, compared to producing 40 x the pollutants when actually driving the cars. And developing software that can discriminate between when an EPA test is being run and unplug itself in the daily driving world, demonstrates a flagrant intent to deceive the governing agencies and the public world wide. 11,000.000 cars, people.

I would expect that Chrysler did their own programming.....
