Jeep complex: higher quality, less money

by David Zatz on

An article in the Toledo Blade by Larry P. Vellequette includes an interview with Toledo plant manager Mauro Pino, an Italian import. He predicts that the Toledo facility will built more than 240,000 vehicles per year in the future, and said, “We are attractive because we are productive. We are productive because we produce good cars.”

Jeep makes the Wrangler, Liberty, and Dodge Nitro at the Toledo complex; it is likely to attract more models when the Liberty takes on more common dimensions with future crossovers and midsize cars.

Pino said that, since Fiat took control, employees have made over 11,000 suggestions (seven per worker, on average), and nearly 80% have been implemented. Some employees were recognized for making over 100 suggestions in the past year. As a result, quality has gone up even as expenses have been cut. Pino said, “These are the easiest guys [to work with]. They are very open,” according to the article.

Dan Henneman, the Jeep unit chairman for UAW Local 12, said, “It’s been refreshing. Mr. Pino stays involved with what’s going on on the shop floor, and he spends a lot of time on the floor… He’s actually been the very first person in that position that’s been a car person… He’s made a lot of quality improvements. He’s a doer, and a worker, and he politely kicks the management guys’ [butts] every day.”
