Sergio Marchionne: on future minivans

by David Zatz on

sergio marchionneSergio Marchionne conducted a round table with newspapers including the Toledo Blade. He said:

If Project Genesis works as it has worked, customers will be asked to choose between two minivans that are structurally the same. So you need to make a brand choice at that point, one that said “I want the Dodge” or “I want the Chrysler,” and I’m not sure that a minivan customer is sufficiently sophisticated to know, “I will never drive a Dodge minivan but I will drive a Chrysler one.”

There’s too much similarity, and I think that the next version of the Swiss army knife minivans needs to be able to cover the whole spectrum. …

If you look at sheer numbers, and given your [the reporter’s] Canadian experience you know that 85% of that number is Dodge, it’s the one that has naturally attracted the biggest part of consumers, both in Canada and the United States, so instinctively you would try and protect your park. …

We will have another people carrier. … [Would one be a Chrysler and another be a Dodge?] Yup. That way you can give the consumer a choice, he can go for the original minivan or he take the alternative which is an evolution of the minivan. I’m not putting the minivan driver down because I’m trying to be snotty, there are people who love minivans because of their function, and there are people who will not drive a minivan because it’s a minivan. …

I think you’re going to see some significant work being done at the Dodge brand to try to take that stigma away from the minivan, I think you can do some real cool things with a minivan….
