Diesels on their way

by David Zatz on

Even as GM confirmed a diesel version of the Chevrolet Cruze, an Allpar reader has spotted a 2011 Chrysler 300 in the Detroit area with a diesel engine under the hood. While the car could be destined for Europe as the Lancia Thema, testing for such a vehicle would likely be done in Italy by Lancia itself, indicating that a VM diesel may be in the 300’s future.

Other than this sighting from a reliable source, there have been no rumors of an American-market Chrysler 300 diesel. However, the premium nature of the car would allow for the pricier powerplant. The 3-liter VM diesel used in Europe produces 190 or 241 hp depending on configuration, with 405 lb-ft of torque — more torque than the gasoline-powered 300C, albeit with far less horsepower than the V6. Gas mileage is expected to be roughly 26-29 mpg, combined.
