Chrysler Canada hits 21 months of sales growth

by Bill Cawthon on

Chrysler Canada today recorded 18,816 sales in August, up 17% compared to last year’s 16,144 sales. August was the 21st consecutive month of sales growth for the Canadian operation.

“Our light trucks continue to set monthly records and Ram truck and Dodge Grand Caravan are firmly entrenched as the second and third best selling vehicles in Canada.” said Dave Buckingham, Chief Operating Officer, Chrysler Canada. “Along with our truck success, incremental sales from the Fiat 500 and Chrysler 200 have allowed us to gain more market share than any other automotive company in Canada this year”

Sales highlights:

Jeep brand sales were up 18 per cent compared to the same period in 2010. The Jeep Wrangler posted a record month of 1,589 units, up 51% compared to August 2010. Grand Cherokee sales increased by 75% to 670 units and the redesigned Compass saw its numbers soar 53% with 551 units sold.

Dodge Grand Caravan sales jumped 47% to 5,466 units and Canada’s best-selling crossover, the Dodge Journey, set an August record of 2,158 sales, 1% ahead of last year’s August record.

Canadians bought 616 Fiat 500s in August as more and more dealerships are opening their doors.

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
