Chrysler US sales zoom up

by David Zatz on

Chrysler reported U.S. sales of 127,334 cars and trucks, a 27% increase over September 2010 and the best September sales since 2007. Retail sales shot up 50%. All Chrysler brands had sales increases; Ram’s 42% rise was the largest of all the brands.

Chrysler finished the month with a 54-day supply of inventory (277,278 units).

Month to month sales comparisons by brand

Sales of the Chrysler 200 were up 87% over Sebring; Chrysler 300 sales increased 50%, and the Chrysler Town & Country rose 16% despite a new strategy which puts Chrysler brand minivans above Dodge in price and features. Despite a 27% rise in Caravan sales and continuing problems with the US economy, Town & Country retains the minivan sales crown, with 10,405 sales for September versus Caravan’s 10,203. Year to date, Town & Country has sold 87,493 premium minivans vs Caravan’s 74,954. The two minivans each lead their brand’s sales.

Ram pickup truck sales were up 45 percent. Both the Light Duty and Heavy Duty pickup trucks, along with the Chassis Cab, logged double-digit percentage sales gains in September. Ram sales as a whole were up 42%; Dakota sales fell 26%. The new Cargo Van (sold as a Dodge last year) posted 134 sales for the month.

Jeep’s 24% increase was driven in part by the new Jeep Compass, now with optional Trail Rated® 4×4 capability, which were up 306 percent. September marked the Jeep brand’s 17th-consecutive month of year-over-year sales gains and best September since 2007. Wrangler and Liberty also had double digit percentage sales increases; Wrangler was the top selling Jeep in September and the second best selling Chrysler vehicle, setting a new sales record for the month. Grand Cherokee sales fell slightly, down 3%, but Durango posted 4,923 sales, making up the difference by a factor of ten.

The Dodge brand posted a 10% sales increase. The Dodge Grand Caravan, America’s best-selling minivan, and the Dodge Journey each posted double-digit percentage sales increases.

Overall, car sales rose 12% month-to-month and are up 9% for the year to date. Truck sales rose 33% and are up 29% year to date. Chrysler is currently 23% over 2010, January-to-September.
