Charger, Challenger, 300C to get electric steering?

by David Zatz on

A reliable source wrote that Chrysler will be going to full electric steering on the Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, and Chrysler 300C, with V8 models only; the V6 will stick with electrically driven hydraulic pumps. The change is to be phased in for the late-2012 model year, but might wait for the 2013s (around August). The system is similar to the one used in the new Dodge Dart.

Fully electric steering has slowly been gaining ground, as vendors have figured out how to tune the system so it feels similar to a traditional hydraulic power assist. It can be less complex, especially when speed-dependent variable-ratio assist is used, and presumably lighter and less expensive.
