Chrysler No. 1 in Canada for first quarter

by Bill Cawthon on

Chrysler remains Canada’s top automaker by sales in the first quarter of 2012. Chrysler Canada today announced its eighth consecutive month of sales growth, with total March sales volume of 22,703 cars and light trucks compared to 20,973 sales in March 2011.

“We’ve had a lot of success over the years on the truck side of our business, but to see the overwhelming appeal of our products on the passenger car side is phenomenal,” said Dave Buckingham, Chief Operating Officer, Chrysler Canada. “In fact, the FIAT 500 and Chrysler 200 posted their biggest sales month since their launch approximately one year ago.

Car sales were up by 50 percent, from 2,903 units in March 2011 to 4,342 units in March 2012. The increase was driven mainly by the Chrysler 200, whose sales have more than tripled compared to 2011 (March 2012: 1,403 units, March 2011: 409 units), marking an all-time record. Even the Chrysler 300 posted strong numbers, up 695 percent to 445 sales.

The Fiat 500 celebrated its first full year in Canada with record-breaking sales, which went from 417 units to March 2011 to 1,207 units March 2012; an increase of 189 percent.

The Jeep Wrangler continues to set records; 1,803 sales compared to 1,282 in March 2011, a gain of 41 percent and a new March sales record.

The Ram continues improve with an all-time record 6,526 sales, up 28 percent from last year’s 5.107 total.

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for just-auto.com, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
