2014? Grand Cherokee CRD (corrected)

by David Zatz on

2014 Jeep Grand CherokeeCRD

The 2014 Grand Cherokee is set to start production in January 2013; the 2013s will have a short run. It will reportedly have a revised front end, with shorter, redesigned grilles, different bumpers, and new headlights; both interior and exterior are set to be “refreshed,” and we have been told to expect the eight-speed automatic (possibly phased in on the Hemi), the 8.4 inch touch-screen, and possibly a stop-start system and other measures to save fuel.

The VM 3.0 diesel should finally show up for the 2014 model year, as well. The shot here, taken in the greater Detroit area, shows one clearly marked “CRD” in back, with camouflage up front. The tailgate is the current version, but that’s expected to be modified for the 2014s; for engine testing, though, there’s no need to swap tailgates.

The eight-speed automatic to be built by Chrysler should be a good match for the diesel, if the two are indeed to be coupled up; the multitude of gears should help keep the diesel in its power band (diesels generally have far lower peak engine speeds than gasoline engines), while the wide range of the transmission should help balance acceleration and economy, by  providing a reasonably low first gear and high top gear.

The diesel should be rated at around 241 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, based on European measurements.
