Chrysler June production up 21.1%

by Bill Cawthon on

Chrysler reported a total production increase of 21.1 percent in June. For the first half of 2012, production is up 22.6 percent compared to the same period last year and the numbers look good for the 2.2 million units predicted by Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne for the full year.

Ram brand posted the largest increase, 59.1 percent, with U.S. Ram pickup production up 117.7 percent. Jeep brand production rose 40.4 percent and still leads in total year-over-year improvement.

The Fiat 500 Cabrio had the most growth of any Chrysler light vehicle model in both June and YTD categories.

Chrysler brand production increased by 12.4 percent in spite of a steep decline in orders for the Chrysler 200/Lancia Flavia convertible. Chrysler 200 sedan production had the most growth of any Chrysler Group passenger car.

Hampered by discontinued models and slumping demand for the Durango, Dodge brand production declined 5.9 percent and is now 1.3 percent behind the first half of 2011. Including only current production models, Dodge production is actually up 13.3 percent led by a 49.3 percent jump in production of the Avenger. Journey/Fiat Freemont production continues to be solid, up 25.0% for June and 56.4 percent for the January-June period.

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for just-auto.com, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
