Plymouth XNR concept car up for auction

by Bill Cawthon on

The Virgil Exner-designed 1960 Plymouth XNR concept car is going up for bids at the RM Auctions Monterey show on August 18. This classic “idea car” was created by the legendary Chrysler designer to compete with the Corvette and was built by Ghia in Italy.

The car has been completely restored to concours condition by RM Canada. No estimate has been set for the car, but those interested in bidding probably need to have a fairly healthy bank account.

Dan Stern sent us the news, saying: “Dan Stern 100% pure car porn. Always has been, for me, ever since I first learnt of the XNR.”

The XNR was featured on “Jay Leno’s Garage” in August 2011. Click here to watch the video.

(Bill’s note: I remember seeing photos of this gorgeous car before the public reveal. My Dad was general works superintendent for Plymouth at the time and I got a sneak peek and, while I was a bit young to think of it as “car porn,” I was definitely wowed by the XNR. I always wished Chrysler would have built it.)

Thanks to Dan Stern for the tip!

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for just-auto.com, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
