Every JGC to be 8-speed

by David Zatz on

According to an Allpar source, pilot runs of the North America-specification Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel are set to come down the assembly line in September 2012. These will reportedly be coupled to the ZF eight-speed automatic transmission also used by some luxury car makers. Production of Grand Cherokee diesels for retail sale will occur, at the earliest, in January 2013, for the 2014 model year (which is coming early to the Grand Cherokee).

The source said that SRT8s will also have an eight-speed automatic for every engine — SRT8, Hemi, and V6 alike.

As indicated by spy shots, buyers can expect new front and rear fascias, headlights, new 8.4″ screen optional stereo (and new base 4.3″ uConnect) as seen in Journey and Charger.

Jeep clearly expects buyers to appreciate the change; a third crew for Jefferson North Assembly is reportedly to start in early November, allowing for a gradual ramping up of the third shift during the 2013 model year. Training for new employees is to start in October.
