Dodge unveils new Blacktops

by Bill Cawthon on

Dodge has gone to the Dark Side for its latest special runs: It has added the Avenger, Challenger R/T and Charger R/T to its Blacktop lineup.

The Blacktop package, which starts at $595 for the Avenger, adds a distinct look with perhaps a touch of sinister with larger, unique Gloss Black wheels, select exterior paint colors, Gloss Black-painted “split-crosshair” grilles with Gloss Black matching grille surround, darkened headlamp bezels and body-color spoilers, along with unique Blacktop interior touches.

“The Blacktop package on the Dodge Charger has proven to be a resounding success by combining a customized one-of-a-kind appearance with great value – a trademark of the Dodge Brand,” said Dodge CEO Reid Bigland. “Now we’re expanding this successful formula to the Avenger, Challenger and Charger R/T, making great style and performance even more accessible, starting at just $595.”

The Dodge Charger SXT and SXT Plus Blacktops are already at dealers, while the remaining models will start production in December as 2013 model year vehicles.

Dodge Avenger Blacktop: The Avenger, gets a menacing new attitude with the Blacktop package. To be offered in Black, Redline Red 2, Bright White, Tungsten Metallic and Billet Silver Metallic, the Avenger Blacktop is based on the 2013 SXT model and adds standard 18-inch Gloss Black aluminum wheels with Gloss Black center caps, Gloss Black front grille, dark-tinted headlamp bezels and a body-color rear spoiler.

Dodge Challenger R/T Blacktop: Available in Pitch Black, Granite Crystal or Billet Silver Metallic, the Challenger Blacktop comes with Gloss Black 20-inch Aluminum Wheels with Gloss Black center caps. There’s also a Gloss Black grille surround and fuel door as well as a new matte graphite body stripe with red edge accents. Dodge adds the Super Track Pak, which includes a high-performance-steering gear, brake linings, and monotube-shock absorbers, P245/45R20 Goodyear Eagle F1 Super Car three-season tires and three-mode ESC with “full off” mode. All-Season tires are available at no extra charge. U.S. MSRP is $1,995.

Dodge Charger R/T Blacktop: For the 2013 model year, Dodge is adding the Blacktop package as an option on the HEMI V8 Charger R/T and R/T Plus. Color choices include Pitch Black, Billet Metallic, Granite Crystal, Bright White, Redline Red Tri-coat and Phantom Black Tri-coat. Dodge adds Gloss Black 20-inch aluminum wheels, Gloss Black center caps, Gloss Black front grille, body-color rear spoiler, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, Sport Mode, 3.06 rear axle and Beats Audio, which includes 10 speakers with subwoofer and 552-Watt amplifier. U.S. MSRP is $1,795.

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for just-auto.com, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
