Grand Cherokee: Access, SRT8, diesel, more on the way

by David Zatz on

Many expect the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee to be unveiled at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show, mainly because it has been frequently spotted both with and without camouflage. Sources say it will come with a new front fascia and a new, much-improved tailgate, and a mildly modified interior with UConnect Access. This is the upcoming telematics system that will take the current UConnect one step further, with faster speeds, downloadable apps and updates, crash notification, vehicle health reports, voice texting, WiFi hotspots, and other features. One source said that the Grand Cherokee would have UConnect Access with a five-inch screen.

Allpar expects to see the same engines, with the new “Torqueflite 8” eight-speed transmission from ZF. The latter should have a major impact on the Grand Cherokee, allowing it to get better gas mileage and significantly quicker acceleration. The eight-speed might debut with the Pentastar V6 and later make its way to the Hemi V8; switching from a five-speed to the eight-speed on the Chrysler 300 / Dodge Charger slashed 0-to-60 times while increasing fuel efficiency by several miles per gallon.

A Grand Cherokee SRT8 has been spied, along with a VM-diesel equipped model; these might or might not be unveiled next month.
