Looking back to 1964

by David Zatz on

Two ongoing series of historical features at Allpar, both written from personal experience, will focus on 1964 over the next two weeks. Some will recognize 1964 as the year the Beatles hit the American charts, the Civil Rights Act was passed (banning racial segregation), Barry Goldwater started running for President, and LBJ declared his war on poverty; but many will know it as the year the Hemi started to dominate drag racing at tracks across the country.

Curtis Redgap’s revived Inside Chrysler series covers the 1964 Dodge, Plymouth, Chrysler, and Imperial cars this week, including squad and pursuit cars; next week, the series will move on to NASCAR. Ramcharger Mike Buckel’s recollections, meanwhile, cover the 1964 Hemi automatics this week, and will move on to the first late-model Hemi dragster next week.
