Dodge ’14 roundup

For model-year 2014, Dodge Durango was thoroughly revamped, gaining eight-speed automatics and much more; and we expect Dodge Dart to be rejiggered, though we don’t know if that means serious powertrain adjustments (that is, optional nine-speed) or just model/trim/option changes. Dodge may start throwing in more goodies; Dodge chief Reid Bigland has already said that the 2.4 might become an option on cars other than Dart GT.

For the carryovers, there aren’t major changes. There are changes to paint colors (bright white replaces stone white, Blue Streak Pearl, Tungsten Metallic, Winter Chill Pearl, and Crystal Blue Pearl are leaving, Granite Crystal and Deep Cherry Red are coming, black is changing slightly, and Header Orange is coming to Charger.)

Each carline will continue or gain a Blacktop line — on SXT for Grand Caravan and SXT,

Dodge is sprucing up Grand Caravan just the same, taking the SXT and turning it into SXT Blacktop. The Grand Caravan SXT (responsible for over half the series’ sales) is gaining an SXT badge, and R/T is getting a power liftgate and remote start. The 3.2 engine was apparently planned for 2014, but won’t be used after all.

Dodge

Dodge Avenger continues in what is likely to be its last year in its current form, with Blacktop extending to SXT.

Charger Blacktop will now be available on SXT, SXT Plus, and R/T. On V6 models, Blacktop goes up to 300 horsepower; regardless, it includes wheel-mounted shift control and Sport mode, 3.06 rear axle ratio, 215 mm rear axle, and a high speed engine controller, along with a bigger stereo. SXT Plus will gain a new badge and heated steering wheel. Charger SE comes with the five speed; SXT and SXT Plus are V6/eight-speed cars; R/T models are Hemi V8/five-speed cars; and SRTs have the 6.4 Hemi and five-speed. Super Been returns, but is expected to account for just a fifth of total SRT sales. Saleswise, SXT Plus is expected to be the biggest volume Charger.

Canadians will be able to buy the 2014 Dodge Challenger Sinister Sport or Super Sport, a C$2500 package upgrading the SXT/SXT Plus to four wheel antilock brakes, 3.07:1 rear axle ratio, shifter paddles, body colored rear spoiler, hands-free cell control, performance steering and suspension, and 20” wheels (the difference between the package is painted wheels in Sinister, chrome wheels in Super). Blacktop also continues, built off R/T. Rallye Redline also continues, built off SXT Plus, and similar in most regards to Sinister Sport and Super Sport; R/T Redline upgrades R/T with 20-inch black chrome wheels with red accents, dual stripes and unique grille surround, Mopar shifter, bright pedals, and black or red leather seats.

Changes for 2014 Challenger are better leather on R/T Classic, which also gets SRT-style seats; and various changes to stereos. HID headlamps will be available on SXT, SXT Plus, and Rallye Redline.  Chrysler expects nearly a third of buyers to opt for the top of the line SRT model,  with other buyers spread out across the board.

Dodge Journey, Canada’s best selling crossover and sometimes Mexico’s as well, will get free UConnect hands-free telephoning on Crew and RT; while SXT will get a cargo compartment cover. Journey buyers have a roughly even spread across price levels.
