Blacktop pricing update/refutation

by David Zatz on

Earlier this month, a Canadian salesman wrote to us to object to pricing on the Blacktop package for 2014 Grand Caravan, given that it requires the SXT Plus group ($1,500), BlueTooth ($850), and DVD Group ($1,925), boosting the cost to C$5,670 rather than the promoted price of C$1,395. A Chrysler representative responded by pointing out that there are often value packages involved, such as the 2013

Ultimate Family Value Package, which provides “roughly $5,000 worth of equipment for only $3,200.”

Earlier this weekend, we added RamMan’s update that there will be a package discount of $2,500 on the Black Top package. The situation can still be confusing for customers, but is more palatable than it was when first described.

Since then, we’ve gotten two additional replies. “Diamond Jim” wrote:

Not sure what the hoo-ha in Canada is, but in the United States, the Black Top edition retails for a mere $595 extra. There are currently no other required options (nor have there been any required) to get that package in the U.S. … Chrysler Group requires a lot less packaging than other automakers (read: imports). Want a Nissan Rogue with leather and no navigation? Not from the factory. Honda has been packaging cars for this way for a long time (LX, EX, EX-L) — there are no options, only accessories. Chrysler Group models allow some of the most flexibility in “a la carte” ordering on the market.

“Boris” added that Blacktops are being built without the Entertainment Package (these might not be for Canadian use), and also pointed out that the 2014 Town & Country and Grand Caravan R/T now come with the black surround headlamps.
