Times spotlights Jeep plant

by David Zatz on

The New York Times has run a laudatory article on the success of Chrysler’s Jefferson North plant, its only major factory within the boundaries of Detroit proper (Vipers are also built within Detroit, but in small numbers.)

The Times writer, Bill Vlasic — the man who reported on the Daimler-Chrysler merger in positive tones even as he detailed the terrible reality in his book Taken for a Ride — called Jefferson North “one of the most modern and successful auto plants in the world,” and noted up front that over 4,600 workers are employed there.

Vlasic wrote that the site is in the middle of a poor neighborhood, and that Chrysler is one of the biggest employers and taxpayers in Detroit; a third of the workers live in the city.

The only other major auto plant in the city is operated by GM, but straddles both Detroit and Hamtramck, and was built at great cost to the city and state, ending up hiring far fewer people than promised.

Vlasic noted that the plant’s quality and efficiency match top factories in Germany and around the world, including import-operated facilities in the South.  Read the full article. (Thanks, dmfinkelstein.)
