Belvidere may have rare year

by David Zatz on

Belvidere's Millionth

Alex Gary of the Rockford Register Star wrote that Chrysler’s Belvidere plant could churn out over 300,000 vehicles this year, the fifth time in the plant’s history this has happened. He pointed out that July’s production was 23,466 cars, 47% above July 2012, and that production has been higher every month in 2013 (than equivalent 2012 numbers); by the end of July, Belvidere had produced 185,261 Dodge Darts, Jeep Compasses, and Jeep Patriots, 30% more than in the first seven months of 2012.

In comparison, 2009’s production was under 85,000.

If the plant continues on its current pace, it will build 318,000 cars, he said; that would be more than in 1984 (306,000 Horizons and Omnis), and similar to 1979 (318,000 Horizons and Omnis). In 2007, the plant had its second best year ever, producing 333,000 Calibers, Patriots, and Compasses; but its best year of all time was 1986, with 335,300 Horizons and Omnis.
