Chrysler warns Viper Club

by Bill Cawthon on

Circulating around SRT Viper forums is a copy of a letter dated August 20, 2013 from Pat Dougherty, Chrysler Group’s director of fleet sales, to Lee Stubberfield, the national president of the Viper Club of America (VCA).

The letter puts the VCA on notice that there is a growing rift between Chrysler and the VCA and that the automaker is seriously considering reexamining its relationship with the group during an internal meeting that Dougherty says will be “…difficult with an unknown outcome.”

The Chrysler letter is careful to differentiate between the national organization and the regional clubs, saying the regional groups are operating in a manner the company can continue to support. In comments to the club’s leadership, Stubberfield maintains the issues are not major and can be resolved.

Copies of the letter can be viewed at the Viper Garage and (free registration required).

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
