Model Drifters available

by David Zatz on

drifterAustralian model sellers Models56 have just released a limited run of Valiant Drifter vans, commemorating Chrysler Australia’s car-based van.

John Pisani wrote that they were releasing just 100 of each color of the van, and only through the www.models56.com.au web site. Models56 is based in Sydney, Australia.

The Drifter van was an upgraded 1977 Valiant CL panel van, with a choice of the 265 Hemi six-cylinder and the  318 V8, with a base four-speed manual transmission. Not many of the CL panel vans were made, and only a limited number were Drifters; there were even fewer Drifter Utilities built.

The 265 Hemi was an Australian creation; Valiants with this engine could often beat Ford and GM cars with V8 engines. The 265 Hemi, in a Valiant Charger, was the fastest accelerating car made in Australia for many years, beating even the same car with the 340 V8. In a 1972 test, Modern Motor did 0-60 in a Valiant Charger with the Hemi Six in a mere 6.3 seconds, with 0-100 in 172; the 351-powered Ford Falcon GT did 0-60 in 7.7 seconds, and 19.2 to 100 mph. (See the 265 Hemi story.)
