Chrysler sales up 11.5%

by Bill Cawthon on

Chrysler today reported U.S. sales of 165,552 units, a 11.5% increase compared with sales in August 2012 (148,472 units), and the group’s best August sales since 2007.

This makes 41 consecutive months of year-over-year sales gains by Chrysler Group, and an 18.2% rebound from July 2013.

All brands reported year-over-year sales gains in August, led by Ram’s 28.9% jump. “Last month we achieved our strongest retail sales in the past 60 months,” said Reid Bigland, Head of U.S. Sales.

Six models set new records: the Dodge Journey had its best sales month ever; the Dodge Challenger, Dodge Dart, Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Compass, and Jeep Patriot each posted their best August sales. Dart sales more than doubled in August, hitting their best level since May of this year. A decline in sales of the Fiat 500 was more than balanced by solid sales of the new 500L.

Chrysler Group finished the month with a 62-days supply of inventory (364,641 units). U.S. industry sales figures for August are projected at an estimated 16.1 million units Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate (SAAR).

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for just-auto.com, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
