Chrysler truck production soared 39%

by Bill Cawthon on

Led by a 131.4% increase in Ram light-duty pickup production, Chrysler’s total truck output was up 39.2% compared to last September. That was more than enough to offset a 10.8% drop in passenger car production and give Chrysler Group a net 22.2% increase.

Overall Ram brand production was up 66.7%, while Jeep posted numbers 52.0% higher than last year. Dodge was up 4.2% on a 28.7% increase in Charger builds and an 11.7% boost for the Durango. Chrysler output was down 5.7% as trimmed schedules for the 200 and 300 wiped out a small increase in Town & Country production. Hardest-hit was Fiat, where slowing demand for the 500 meant a 50.8% production cut.

Passenger cars made up 24.8% of total output, down from 34.0% in September 2012. Year-to-date car production is now 0.2% behind the first three quarters of 2012.

Jeep Cherokee production remained robust: 18,849 have been produced so far, with no reports of any at dealerships so far. There should also be an adequate supply of ProMaster vans.

Dart production was down from last year, but in line with recent sales.

Bill Cawthon grew up in the auto industry in the 1950s. His Dad worked for Chrysler and Bill spent a number of Saturdays down on the plant floor at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. Bill is also the U.S. market correspondent for just-auto.com, a British auto industry publication, and a member of the Texas Auto Writers Association, which has named the Jeep Grand Cherokee the “SUV of Texas” several times and named the Ram 1500 as the “Truck of Texas” two years running.

Bill has owned five Plymouths (including the only 1962 “Texan”), one Dodge and one Chrysler and is still trying to figure out how to justify a Wrangler. He also has owned at least one of every 1:87 scale model of a Chrysler product. You can reach him directly at (206) 888-7324 or by using the form.
