Pentastar V6 engines

Chrysler announced the construction of its three millionth 3.6 liter Pentastar V-6 engine just before 7 am today, at the Trenton (Michigan) Engine Complex. The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 was launched in model-year 2011, and is built in Trenton and Saltillo, Mexico; around one engine is made every six minutes. Two new versions have been released recently, a 3.2 liter V6 (first used in 2014 Jeep Cherokee) and a 3.0 liter V6 (currently used in 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokees sold in China, and destined for Europe as well).


Pentastar family production reached 3 million engines on Oct. 29. Nearly half of all Chrysler Group vehicles sold during the first 10 months of this year were equipped with Pentastar-family engines.

The Pentastar V6 replaced seven different engines. One of Ward’s 10 Best Engines for three years running, it is a rarity in the list — outperforming competitors without direct injection. It contributes to 22 best-in-class benchmarks:

  • Best-in-class towing (6,200 lbs.) among full-size SUVs with V-6 engines (Dodge Durango)

  • Best-in-class driving range of (600+ miles) among gasoline-powered mid-size SUVs (Jeep Grand Cherokee)

All Pentastar engines feature a dual-cam-phasing system which provides variable valve timing. It is used in 17 applications across nine segments, according to WardsAuto segmentation.

The Pentastar architecture is designed to be modular, and supports longitudinal and transverse orientations; front-wheel-, rear-wheel-, all-wheel- and four-wheel-drive systems; 6-speed manual transmissions and and 6-, 8- and 9-speed automatic transmissions. There are just two  intake manifolds – one for the Ram 1500 and Jeep Wrangler series, and one for all other vehicles. The exhaust manifold is integrated with the cylinder heads for packaging efficiency. The engine also boasts forged-steel connecting rods and piston-squirter jets, and its cam drive and valve-train components require no scheduled maintenance.
