AutoGuide: Ram is top truck

by David Zatz on

AutoGuide named Ram 1500 the top truck for 2014, particularly due to the four-corner air suspension, eight-speed transmission, and diesel engine. The magazine wrote that the 3-liter diesel beat “every other truck by at least 2 mpg.” Their test included a drive with the truck empty, and one with a thousand pounds of payload and a 6,000 pound trailer. The latter test likely helped the diesel to triumph over Ford’s turbocharged gasoline engines.

The top seller in the segment, Ford F-150, placed last in the comparison. Some complaints about the Ford included the difficulty of hooking up trailers, due to design issues, poorly set up tie-downs, and a less than ideal interior.

Toyota Tundra beat the Ford to third place, despite poor fuel economy and a stiff suspension in their real-world testing. The Chevrolet Silverado came in second place, with praise for fuel economy but criticism of the small V8’s torque; the publication liked the interior and ride.

AutoGuide reported that the Ram diesel achieved 26 mpg empty, 22 mpg carrying 1,000 pounds, and 15 mpg towing a trailer; the next best trailer-towing number for any truck was for the V6 Ram, with 12.5 mpg. All other trucks, save the Toyota (10 mpg), were tested at 11-12 mpg in trailer-towing.

Empty or with a 1,000-pound payload, the Ram 1500 V6 also achieved second-place after the Ram diesel in gas mileage, beating all comers by around 3 mpg empty and 2 mpg with a thousand pound payload.
