Grand Cherokee re-passes moose test

A Swedish magazine, which two years ago made waves by claiming that the Jeep Grand Cherokee had failed its “moose test”  (sudden swerves emulating the sighting and avoidance of a moose in the road) after allegedly overloading the SUV by 150 lb, has now completely cleared the 2014 Grand Cherokee in a new test.

A car failing the test provides a great deal of publicity to the magazine and allows them to run headlines insisting that the vehicle is “deadly.”

In 2012, Chrysler representatives had been told by a test driver that the Jeep was overloaded. The German magazine Auto, Motor, und Sport (AMS) had already found that the 2012 Jeep passed the test, and re-tested it afterwards to be sure.  AMS reported, “Whether loaded with 2 people on board or with the maximum permissible total weight, all four wheels maintained contact with the ground to the greatest possible extent. The tested Jeep did not demonstrate one-sided uplift or, let alone, tipping. This confirms the theory that the Cherokee in Sweden was overloaded.”

Swedish magazine Teknikens Värld issued a press release in which they reiterated their claims of “dangerous behavior,” claiming to have repeated the tests with different vehicles, and implying that Jeep engineers had tampered with any vehicle that passed. Still, for the 2014s, they used 6,501 pounds of payload, with summer tires and the 3-liter diesel, and claimed responsibility for the Jeep’s passing the test without problems.
