Tom Hoover at Mopars at the Strip

by David Zatz on

Mopars at the Strip (MATS), an annual, three-day show, will host Tom Hoover, known as father of the Chrysler® Hemi® engine, and other original members of the legendary Ramchargers drag racing team on April 11-13, 2014, at the Las Vegas (Nevada) Motor Speedway.

Mr. Hoover was a Chrysler engineer from 1955 to 1979, and was responsible for launching the company’s Hemi® race program and developing the 426 Hemi® engine.

Mr. Hoover helped found the Ramchargers in 1959 along with Wayne Erickson, Dick Maxwell, Don Moore, Herman Mozer, and Jim Thornton. The group became one of the most successful drag racing teams of all time, breaking the most time barriers in drag racing history and earning the most National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Super Stock titles during the sport’s golden age of factory competition (1950s-1970s).

MATS has one of the richest payouts for a muscle car event in the West, and includes a  drag racing program, vintage and late-model car show, swap meet, manufacturers’ midway, car corral, autocross, off-road poker run, and other competitions. A recent addition is “Pony Car Wars” pitting 2006 and newer Dodge Challengers, Chevrolet Camaros, and Ford Mustangs on the LVMS quarter-mile.
